1. SACHEM EAST FIELD HOCKEY
The Flaming Arrows went 21-1 last season, capturing their first Suffolk championship before going on to win the Class A state title. Sachem East returns most of its core, including All-American midfielder Katie Trombetta along with Karyn Ryan, Kayla McKeveny and goalie Jordan Miller.

2. LAWRENCE FOOTBALL
Sophomore halfback Jordan Fredericks totaled five touchdowns, including two on interception returns of 95 and 47 yards for scores, as the Golden Tornado beat Glen Cove, 62-7. Fredericks had 311 all-purpose yards as the defending Nassau Conference III champs opened with a win.

3. BRENTWOOD BOYS SOCCER
The Indians go for their fifth consecutive Suffolk Class AA championship -- and this could be their best team in a while. They return almost everyone, and are led by forwards Ever Torres and Johnathan Interiano and defender Jeffrey Medina.

4. GARDEN CITY FIELD HOCKEY
The Trojans graduated 11 seniors from last year's Class B state finalist squad. But a team that has won 17 straight Nassau titles and seven consecutive Long Island championships surely knows a thing or two about retooling quickly. Garden City is led by Victoria Piscopo, Tara DeAngelo and Charlotte Castronvo.

5. ST. ANTHONY’S BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
The Friars return Pat Ginty Jake Hensler to a deep and experienced team to defend the CHSAA Intersectional title.

6. NORTH SHORE GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
North Shore, which has won 51 straight meets, is the defending state Class B champions headed into the 2012 season led by Elizabeth Caldwell and Jessica Donohue.

7. SAYVILLE FOOTBALL
The Golden Flashes beat Bellport, 49-13, behind the running of senior halfback John Haggart, who scored three touchdowns on nine carries. Quarterback Zach Sirico ran for a score and threw for a touchdown as the defending Suffolk Division III champs won the season opener easily.

8. MASSAPEQUA BOYS VOLLEYBALL
The Chiefs have won three straight Nassau Class A titles and earned the Division I Long Island crown with a win over Lindenhurst.

9. SYOSSET GIRLS TENNIS
The Braves won the Long Island girls tennis championship for the third straight year. They were awarded a forfeit win over Half Hollow Hills East, the Suffolk champion, to remain undefeated.

10. SOUTH SIDE GIRLS SOCCER
The Cyclones are led by senior forward Christina Klaum, who scored 11 of her 19 goals in the post-season in 2011. South Side is the defending state Class A champions.
