BIG 10: Friars girls stay on top
1. ST. ANTHONY’ S GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Friars lost the season opener to Holy Cross of Maryland and then reeled off eight consecutive wins. The Friars are loaded with a ton of depth at all positions and will be bolstered even more with the addition of Chastity Taylor and Kimani Jackson, two transfer students.
2. ST. MARY’S BOYS BASKETBALL: The Gaels beat Holy Trinity, 87-60, with Chavaughn Lewis and Justin Bailey scoring 28 points apiece. They have a huge non-league game coming up on Thursday at Long Island Lutheran, with the winner emerging as Newsday's No. 1 boys basketball team.
3. LONGWOOD WRESTLING: The Lions upped their dual meet winning streak to 60 as they crushed No. 5 ranked Brentwood, 46-18. Longwood won the Smithtown East Tournament by outscoring Connetquot, 365.5-301. The Lions crowned nine individual champions. Longwood is 6-0 this season in dual meets and has won three tournaments.
4. EAST ISLIP GIRLS BOWLING: With dominant performances in each match, the Redmen continue to reaffirm their status. East Islip improved to 12-0 with four wins last week and upped their Long Island-leading team average to 1001.67. Individually, Lena Sorrentino (207.7) and Tara Ernst (206.9) are second and third, respectively, amongst girls.
5. ST. ANTHONY’S WRESTLING: The Friars beat Kellenberg in a CHSAA dual meet and won four straight wins in the prestigious Union-Endicott Duals at Binghamton, including a big win over Glenn. The Friars are now 10-0 heading into the final after defeating Fulton, Minisink Valley, and Sayville at the UE Duals.
6. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN BOYS BASKETBALL: The Crusaders haven't played since they walloped Albany last Monday in the Hoops Mountain Tip-Off Classic at Skidmore College. Expect a big crowd in Old Brookville on Thursday night for the showdown with No. 1 St. Mary's, featuring two of Long Island’s best players in LuHi's Achraf Yacoubou and St. Mary's Chavaughn Lewis.
7. ST. ANTHONY’S BOYS ICE HOCKEY: The Friars beat Iona Prep, 2-1, on Jan. 3 to get back on the winning track. The reining CHSHL champs have outscored their opponents 26-12 so far this season. Sean Keating has allowed just three goals in three games this season, making 42 saves in 135 minutes.
8. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS FENCING: Abby Siskidis, Colleen Scriven and Kristen Fischbach combined to go undefeated in foil against Centereach and Whitman as Ward Melville ended the week with an overall record of 6-0. They have 130 consecutive dual meet wins.
9. WARD MELVILLE BOYS FENCING: Ward Melville finished the week at 2-0 with wins against Centereach and Whitman to remain undefeated on the season.
10. HALF HOLLOW HILLS BOYS SWIMMING: Matt DeBlasio won the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.44) and Ryan Savit scored a 291.40 to win the one-meter dive as Hills defeated Connetquot, 98-82, in its first meet of the season. Hills is aiming for its fifth perfect season after going undefeated in dual-meets, league championships and county finals the past four. On the outside looking in; Portledge boys ice hockey, Half Hollow Hills West boys basketball.

Anthony Pistone, Sachem East, wrestling: He beat the top two seeded wrestlers in the weight class to win the Rocky Gilmore Tournament at East Islip at 140 pounds.
Nigel McNeil, Huntington, wrestling: McNeil, the defending state champ at 112 pounds, knocked off Wantagh’s Joe Barbato, the state runnerup from a year ago, 7-5, to win the Ted Petersen Tournament at Island Trees.
Tavon Sledge, Half Hollow Hills West, boys basketball: The senior guard scored a career-best 35 points in Saturday night's 70-69 overtime loss at Archbishop Molloy and scored 31 in a victory over Huntington.
Anthony White, Floyd, boys basketball: The senior forward had a double-double in the Colonials last two victories * 22 points and 15 rebounds in Saturday's victory over Patchogue-Medford and 15 and 10 against Sachem East.
Max Krackow, Bellmore-Merrick, boys swimming: Krackow posted a 51.18 in the 100-yard freestyle on Jan. 5. His time is second in the county to Plainview*s Jeremy Gabalski, and he trails him by just 0.04 seconds.
Albert Markopoulos, Garden City, ice hockey: Markopoulos leads Nassau in goals with 23, five more than his next closest competitor. He*s also racked up 16 assists and is tied for first in points with 39.
Meghan Eckel, Kings Park, girls basketball: Eckel had 18 points, 12 rebounds, 11 steals, and 10 assists in a 69-53 win over Miller Place and 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists in a 60-39 win over Sayville.
Kristen Korzevinski, Holy Trinity, girls basketball: She had 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 73-43 win over St. Mary's and 13 points, seven assists and four steals in a 61-49 win over Springside School.
Kaelyn Ward, East Hampton, girls basketball: The sophomore scored a career-high 32 points in a 46-32 win over Mount Sinai. Glen Forsythe, Uniondale, boys track: Took first in the long jump in 23 feet, 4 ¾ inches at the Hispanic Games at the Armory.
Kelly Clifford, MacArthur, girls track: Won the high jump in 5 feet, 2 inches at the Hispanic Games at the Armory.
Melissa Sherwin, Middle Country, girls bowling: She bowled a 298 in a 3-0 win last Thursday and her 787 series was the highest among girls this season. Her 216 average is tops among girls.
