Clinton, Copiague hold off Deer Park
Devine Clinton hit a layup to give No. 4 Copiague a one-point lead then got a steal with four seconds left, was fouled, and made a free throw to create the final margin for the Eagles in a 64-62 victory over No. 13 Deer Park Saturday in the first round of the Suffolk Class AA boys basketball playoffs.
Clinton had nine points. Jeremiah Aponte scored a game-high 25 points and had 15 rebounds for Copiague (16-3). Kyle Bradford had 20 points for Deer Park. Copiague will host No. 5 Floyd at 5 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals.
Floyd 52, Sachem North 50: Shabazz Thompkins converted a three-point play with 28 seconds left to give No. 5 Floyd a 50-46 lead in the first round of the Class AA playoffs. Thompkins, a senior, scored a career-high 24 points and Anthony White added 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Floyd (16-3). Vinny Vacanti scored 20 points for No. 12 Sachem North.
East Islip 52, Bay Shore 48: Brian Johnson had 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 7 East Islip (16-3) in the first round of the Class AA playoffs. Steven Frost (10 points) hit two free throws with 35 seconds left to give the Redmen a 50-48 lead. Devin Farmer scored 18 points for No. 10 Bay Shore. East Islip will face No. 2 Longwood on Thursday.
Longwood 81, Riverhead 54: Paris Parks had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists to lead No. 2 Longwood (17-2) in the first round of the Class AA playoffs. Blake Evans scored 17 points, Josh Taylor added 13 points and 11 rebounds, and JoJo Aiken had 13 points. Ben Edmund scored 17 points for No. 15 Riverhead.
Half Hollow Hills West 63, Eastport-South Manor 49: Senior Tavon Sledge scored a career-high 36 points to lead No. 1 Half Hollow Hills West (14-4) in the first round of the Class AA playoffs. Chris Cox added 12 points for Hills West. Curtis Smith scored 12 points for No. 17 Eastport-South Manor. The Colts will host Central Islip on Thursday.
Whitman 53, Brentwood 41: Darrell Felder scored four points during an 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead No. 6 Whitman (12-6) in the first round of the Class AA playoffs. Donovan Stewart had 14 points for No. 11 Brentwood. Whitman will visit No. 3 West Babylon on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
Islip 66, Shoreham-Wading River 52: Andrew Oberg had 15 points and 17 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards, and six blocks to lead No. 4 Islip (14-5) in the Class A quarterfinals. John Horowitz added 20 points, including five three-pointers. Kevin Davis had 30 points for No. 5 Shoreham-Wading River (10-9). Islip visits top-seeded Harborfields in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Greenport 61, Southold 46: Dantre Langhorne scored 14 of his game-high 30 points in the fourth quarter to lead No. 1 Greenport (18-1) in a Class C semifinal. Langhorne also had 18 rebounds and eight assists. Winston Wilcenski had 19 points for No. 4 Southold. Greenport will face No. 3 Port Jefferson at noon Tuesday in the final at Longwood.
Port Jefferson 53, Stony Brook 48: Greg Nielsen had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead No. 3 Port Jefferson (10-5) in the Class C semifinals. Terrell Rose added 14 points and five assists. Tim Pandolfi scored 18 points for No. 2 Stony Brook.
