In what has been a magical ride for Bayport-Blue Point boys lacrosse, its regular-season finale made the trip worth the while.

Behind four-point performances from attackmen Connor Curran and Ben Morris, BBP defeated host Shoreham-Wading River, 10-5, on Thursday night. The victory allowed BBP (15-1) to leapfrog East Islip in the Suffolk II standings and clinch the Suffolk II title, as it owns the tiebreaker in power points.

After winning the school’s first regular-season championship since 2016, BBP coach Doug Meehan was pleased yet still unsatisfied.

“This feels awesome,” Meehan said. “It’s extremely difficult; there’s a ton of adversity throughout the season, but we do have bigger goals. I am very, very proud of them. That is not an accomplishment we look down on, but we have much bigger goals ahead.”

Morris and Curran pulled the strings for the offense, as each assisted on a goal by senior midfielder Brendan Waters within the game’s first five minutes. After going up 2-0 on Waters’ goals, Curran rolled off a pick to his left and ripped one into the back of the net for his first score of the night. Later in the quarter, Curran dodged his way through traffic and flicked one in to make it 4-1.

Curran later completed a hat trick with 10:17 left in the fourth quarter when he caught a feed from defender Mikey Luce on the doorstep and fired his shot home to make it a 10-3 lead against SWR (10-6).

Curran said his success while spearheading the attack came from his comfortability.

“Just finding my guys that were open and being fearless,” Curran said. “This is a big game, you’d love to get yourself on the stat sheet, so you’ve just got to put yourself out there and put yourself in a position to do so.”

In the absence of senior midfielder Danny Aiello — one of BBP’s top weapons — Morris felt the need to step up in other areas. On offense, Morris scored one goal and dished out a team-leading three assists. Morris also picked up five ground balls and won five faceoffs to help himself end his final regular season as a Suffolk II champion.

After clinching the banner, Morris made his message clear: his team is ready for whatever comes next.

“I love this team, I love the way we play. We fear none and we try to get others to fear us. I don’t think we have any weaknesses on this team.”
