5. Boys Soccer — Hicksville beats Brentwood (Nov. 13)
Peter DiLorenzo and Kyle Poetzch scored as Hicksville beat Brentwood, 2-0, in the Long Island Class AA championship, the first time the Comets had triumphed in the LIC since 1983. Hicksville had lost to Brentwood, 3-0, two years previous in the LIC. In 2011, Brentwood came out of a tough Suffolk bracket and entered the game a three-time defending LIC Class AA champion. They had won a state title two of the past three seasons. This time, Hicksville went on to win a state title, something the soccer team hadn’t done since 1979.
