KAAN ILGIN
Long Island Player of the Year
Mattituck, F, Sr.
The first thing Kaan Ilgin wants you to know about his decision is that he’s aware why many disagree with it. Shortly after leading Mattituck to its first boys soccer state championship since 2003 last month, Ilgin announced he de-committed from Albany and instead will attempt to play at the professional level. The Red Bulls and the Cosmos have expressed interest, according to Tom Lips, who coaches Smithtown West and Smithtown Arsenal, a traveling team that Ilgin plays on. “A lot of people, even my parents, have said to go to college,’’ Ilgin said. “But, the way I see it, college will be there for me if this doesn’t work out. This opportunity may not be here in a few years.’’Few players have Ilgin’s skill-set. He’s incredibly quick to the ball, can finish with either foot, can score from 40 yards and can find teammates with jaw-dropping, no-look passes. Ilgin, an All-Long Island selection as a junior, is Newsday’s Long Island Player of the Year after scoring 20 goals and racking up 12 assists this season.

GREG BAUMSTEIN
Nassau Player of the Year
MacArthur, D, Sr.
Three years ago, the MacArthur boys soccer team didn't win a game. Greg Baumstein was on that team as a freshman. The losses didn't sit well with him. Slowly, things improved - and so did Baumstein. The next season, the Generals went 10-2-2 and lost to Plainview JFK in the playoffs. After that, MacArthur went 13-1, losing to Syosset in the quarterfinals. Last month, behind Baumstein, a stalwart defender who is committed to Rhode Island, MacArthur captured its first county championship. MacArthur's defense allowed only five goals in 17 games this season. "I never thought it could even be close to possible," Baumstein said after the Generals won the title. "We had a team that worked hard, but we never could put it together, never winning a game and now winning a county championship, you never think it would happen."
