Long Island Player of the Year: Kristen Shanahan, Sachem East, M, Jr.

Shanahan is the consummate team player. Sure, she scores goals -- a lot of them -- 27 in total. And she's a playmaker -- her 12 assists attest to her unselfish play around the net. And when she's not peppering the opponent's goal, Shanahan is back on defense contributing to a unit that racked up 12 shutouts this year.

The athletic midfielder led Long Island with 39 points and scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Massapequa to claim the Long Island Class A title. She scored 27 of the Flaming Arrows' 61 goals. Her stick skills helped Sachem East maintain possession of the ball and dictate the flow of the game.

Shanahan's dominant play from one end of the field to the other earned her Newsday's Long Island Player of the Year.

Nassau Player of the Year: Liana McDonnell, Garden City, M, Sr.

A do-it-all player, McDonnell's presence was apparent on both sides of the field. She never failed to drop back on defense, coach Diane Chapman said, but also helped push tempo and control possession. "She controls the game on both sides of the field, and she is an integral part of both offensive and defensive corners," Chapman said.

In the state championship game, her defensive awareness held a 1-0 lead and victory for the Trojans. Garden City won its first state Class B title since 2008, knocking off nine-time defending champion Lakeland, 1-0, to cap a 19-0 season. The Trojans allowed only seven goals all year, recording 13 shutouts. They registered shutouts in the Long Island championship, state semifinal and championship game.

Katie Allen, Sachem East, D, Jr. 

Allen led a team that allowed only seven goals all season and recorded 12 shutouts, while adding nine goals and six assists of her own. The Flaming Arrows finished the season with an undefeated Suffolk I record (15-0) and went 18-1 on the year, with a trip to the state Class A semifinal game. 

Emily Berlinghof, Cold Spring Harbor, M, Sr.

Berlinghof finished with 10 goals and three assists on a Cold Spring Harbor team that went 9-3 in Nassau I and 9-4 overall. Cold Spring Harbor fell to Garden City in the Nassau Class B championship game. 

Emiline Biggin, Carle Place, F, Jr. 

Biggin led the Frogs with 19 goals and six assists, to place second in Nassau in the goals category. The junior contributed two goals and one assist in the team's state Class C tournament semifinal victory. Despite falling in the state final game, Biggin more than doubled her goal total from last year (9). Carle Place finished 8-4 in Nassau I and 11-4 overall. 

Kasey Choma, Eastport-South Manor, M, Sr. 

Choma's 19 goals and nine assists topped Eastport-South Manor's run to the Suffolk Class A semifinals. Choma was Eastport-South Manor's leading goal scorer for the second consecutive season. ESM finished 13-3 overall and 13-2 in Suffolk I. 

Caitlin Cook, Garden City, F, Sr. 

Cook's two goals and one assist led the Trojans to a 5-0 victory over Miller Place in the Long Island Class B championship game. She finished the season with 12 goals and 11 assists, and ranked third in points for Nassau.

Lilly Fox, Northport, F, Sr. 

Fox topped the Tigers with 21 goals (second in Suffolk) en route to the school record for most career goals (48)  and guided her team to their first Suffolk Class A championship game. The senior broke the record for most goals in program history (48), and as a team, the Tigers' 65 goals also are a program record. 

Charlotte Johnson, Pierson, G, Sr. 

Johnson led Long Island with 156 saves for the third consecutive season. The senior recorded a 1-0 shutout in the Whalers' fourth consecutive Suffolk Class C championship, including a crucial save with under two minutes remaining. The win advanced Pierson to the Long Island championship. 

Grace Kelly, Garden City, F, Sr. 

Kelly led Nassau with 26 goals, the most scored in the county in at three years. The Trojans finished with 90 goals this season as a team, after finishing with 57 last year. 

Sarah Killcommons, Garden City, D, Soph.

"Sarah is an outstanding field hockey player," coach Diane Chapman said. "She has great defensive skills and her timing on tackling and taking the ball away from opponents is incredible. She has strong stick skills and carries the ball with confidence when distributing the ball to her teammates."

Sophia Little, Northport, D, Sr.

Northport coach Gina Walling said Little is a commanding defender, who has excellent tracking abilities and incredible field vision. Little tallied a 75-yard assist during a game this season after seeing an opening in the field. She will play next fall at SUNY Oneonta.

Long Island Coach of the Year: Diane Chapman, Garden City

Chapman led the Trojans to their first state Class B title since 2008, knocking off nine-time defending champion Lakeland, and capped a 19-0 season.

Suffolk Coach of the Year: Gina Walling, Northport

Walling guided the Tigers to their first Suffolk title appearance in program history. Northport finished at 15-4 overall and 13-1 in Suffolk I, the best record in the last three seasons.
