Newsday's All-Long Island field hockey team 2015

Long Island player of the year: Michaela Bruno, Garden City, M, Sr.

Michaela Bruno was the soul of a deeply talented team that went 17-0 before losing to Lakeland in the state Class B championship. Her stick skills and speed helped her dominate on the way to a Nassau County-leading 32 points.

"I had so much fun with everyone on the team and I'm so proud of what we accomplished" Bruno said. It was a perfect combination of effort, heart and love for the game."

Bruno, a Georgetown commit for field hockey and lacrosse, was often pulled past defenders for 10-to-50 yard gains with each carry. She was equally as impressive during penalty corners and penalty strokes.

The team captain, Bruno was relied on to score big goals and delivered when the stakes were high, including a hat trick in the county finals and a stroke goal during the Long Island Championship.

Bruno was also a role player at times, distributing the ball to her teammates and hustling back defensively as needed.

"She was a great leader on and off the field," said Garden City coach Diane Chapman. "Her skill level was just unbelievable and she made so many teammates better. When you have somebody at that level that can see the game, it's kind of like having a coach on the field."

Suffolk player of the year: Cara Trombetta, Sachem East, F, Sr.

Cara Trombetta was tenacious and led Long Island with 35 points. She carried the offense for the 12-5 Flaming Arrows, who reached the Suffolk Class A semifinals.

She scored clutch goals against strong opponents,and her quick hands, athleticism and instinct helped her stand out.

"This season was definitely different than what I'm used to," Trombetta said, adding that she only lost three games before this year. "But it doesn't mean we weren't successful. We fought hard, I know I don't have any regrets."

Sachem East coach Tina Moon said Trombetta was a special player. "She's like the quarterback," Moon said. "She's intelligent, she's fierce, she takes everything to another level."

Frankie Conklin, North Shore, G, Jr.

Frankie Conklin's efforts don't show in the win column, but the aggressive and athletic goalie led Long Island with 190 saves. Her team lost four games by one goal each.

Shawn Davenport, Ward Melville, D, Sr.

Shawn Davenport backstopped the defense, but was also a maestro in transition. Her stick skills and creative passing made her a two-way threat.

Crystal Esposito, Miller Place, F, Soph.

Crystal Esposito's first season as a starter was a breakout one. The speedy attacker with sharp instincts led her team with 31 points (24 goals).

Elissa Frein, Carle Place, F, Sr.

Elissa Frein's best moments came when the stakes were high. She had four points in the Nassau C title game and led the Frogs with 27 points this season.

Taylor Gladd, Garden City, M, Jr.

Taylor Gladd controlled the pace of the game at midfield, but was also an important part of offensive penalty corners. She led the Trojans with 10 assists.

Noelle Peragine, Northport, F, Sr.

Noelle Peragine was the finisher on offense. She led the team with 15 goals and shared the scoring lead with 24 points.

Nickie Sciulla, Rocky Point, F, Sr.

Nickie Sciulla was second in Suffolk scoring with 33 points. Her physical play on the way to the cage and ability to finish made her dangerous this season.

Ana Sherwood, Pierson/Bridgehampton, M/F, Jr.

Ana Sherwood wasn't afraid to get creative on offense. She often air dribbled down the field while dodging opponents and was especially strong in the circle.

Long Island coach of the year: Jenna Rickert, Eastport-South Manor

Under Jenna Rickert, the Sharks went 11-5 in their first year as a varsity program, reaching the Suffolk Class A quarterfinals.

Nassau coach of the year: Diane Chapman, Garden City

Diane Chapman's 17-1 team outscored opponents 91-10 and reached the Class B State Championship.
