Newsday's All-Long Island field hockey team 2016

Long Island player of the year: Kerri Thornton, Ward Melville, F, Jr.

Thornton was one of the most electrifying players in Long Island field hockey this season, scoring at least a point in 17 of her team's 21 games. Thornton's exceptional off the ball movement allowed her teammates to find her in open spaces, which helped create numerous scoring opportunities. Thornton collected 14 goals in her team's first six games and finished the season second on Long Island in points with 33, tallying 21 goals and 12 assists. Thornton dazzled in the Long Island Class A title match against Baldwin with a goal and two assists. "Her game sense, ball control and ability to make things come to fruition is an absolute pleasure to watch," Ward Melville coach Shannon Sioss said. "Her ability to spark those around her and make the team play at a top level is a true testament to how strong of a player she is. I am so thrilled to say that she will back next year."

Nassau player of the year: Taylor Gladd, Garden City, M, Sr.

One of the most talented midfielders on Long Island, Gladd was tied with a Nassau-best 14 goals and was the leader in assists with 13 and 27 points. Some of the Cornell-commit's best games included efforts against Suffolk C champ Pierson/Bridgehampton (1 goal, 3 assists), Nassau A finalist Massapequa (1 goal), Nassau A champion Baldwin (3 goals), Suffolk A contender Northport (1 goal, 1 assist), and state Class A semifinalist Ward Melville (1 goal). The four-year starting center midfielder guided the Trojans to a 67-7 record during her varsity career. Gladd also won a bronze medal at the 2015 Junior Olympic Games. "She's an incredible athlete that can play offense and defense, can pass the ball and is able finish on both ends," said Trojans coach Diane Chapman. "She could do more herself, but she knows it's a team game, and the way she distributes the ball and what she's able to do, says a lot about her."

Jackie Brown, Port Jefferson, F, Sr.

The Adelphi signee had an incredible senior season leading Long Island with 31 goals and 34 points. Brown also scored two goals in the Suffolk Class C title game.

Haley Clark, Rocky Point, F, Sr.

Did it all for the Eagles, using her stick skills and speed to score goals and create opportunities for her teammates. Clark finished the season with 16 goals and 13 assists.

Emily Clarke, Garden City, M, Sr.

Clarke was tied for second in Nassau in both goals (12) and points (20). She had big efforts vs. Pierson/Bridgehampton (3 goals, 1 assist) and Northport (2 assists).

Megan McGuinness, Carle Place, G, Jr.

McGuinness was tied for the most saves in Nassau with 136 and had eight shutouts for the 13-2 Frogs, who reached the state Class C semifinal.

Kate Mulham, Ward Melville, M, Jr.

The midfielder was crucial to Ward Melville's 20-1 season, controlling the ball in the midfield and creating scoring opportunities for her forwards.

Caitlyn O’Connor, Massapequa, F, Sr.

O'Connor was tied for most goals in Nassau with 14 and had 18 points. She will play field hockey and lacrosse for the College of Wooster next season.

Samantha Reed, Carle Place, M, Sr.

Reed had seven goals and 10 assists, and was tied for seventh in Nassau in points (17). She had the Frogs' lone goal in the state Class C semifinal.

Ana Sherwood, Pierson/Bridgehampton, M/F, Sr.

Sherwood tallied 14 goals and eight assists and helped the Whalers capture the Suffolk Class C title. She had four goals and an assist in the Suffolk C title match.

Long Island coach of the year: Shannon Sioss, Ward Melville

Sioss led the 20-1 Patriots to their second consecutive Long Island Class A championship. Her team excelled in every aspect of the game, limiting opponents scoring chances, while outscoring opponents 82-8.

Nassau coach of the year: Carol Nesdill, Carle Place

She guided Carle Place to wins over Class B finalist Garden City during the regular season, Oyster Bay in the Nassau C title game, and Pierson/Bridgehampton in the Long Island Class C championship.
