2011 All-Long Island football team

ISAIAH BARNES
Freeport, QB, 6-4, 190, Senior
Always mobile, Barnes greatly improved his passing, with 23 TD passes, 1,887 yards and only three interceptions. Also rushed for 1,288 yards and 17 TDs. Matched career-best with seven total TDs in playoff win over Hicksville (four passing, three running).

STACEY BEDELL
Floyd, RB, 5-10, 175, Senior
He capped a magnificent career by rushing for a Long Island Championship-record 412 yards in leading Floyd to a thrilling 54-47 victory over East Meadow in the Class I game on Nov. 27. Bedell ran for four touchdowns – on runs of 80, 80, 59 and 51. On the 59-yarder, he put on several stop-and-start moves in the backfield before hurtling a tackler and breaking free. An outstanding defensive back, Bedell also made 12.5 tackles in the title game. He shared the Hansen and the Suffolk County Running Back Award with Dalton Crossan. Among the schools actively recruiting Bedell are James Madison and Stony Brook.

MATT BISCARDI
St. Anthony’s, OL, 6-2, 275, Senior
No matter how many skill-position players got hurt, center Biscardi, a repeat All-L.I. choice, made sure the subs had plenty of room to maneuver. A primary reason the Friars went 10-0 and captured their 10th CHSFL title in 11 years.

JERE BROWN
Freeport, WR, 5-10, 170, Senior
Tough two-way player who had 38 catches for 673 yards and seven TDs. Won Nassau County receiver award. Outstanding blocker. Returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown and was a hard-hitting defensive back with 38 tackles.

RALPH CACCAVALE
Plainedge, DB, 5-10, 150, Senior
Thorp Award finalist was threat to score from anywhere on field. Made 45 tackles with six interceptions, returning one for a score. Rushed for 1,388 yards and 24 touchdowns. Fine punter and elusive kick returner. Broke four school records.

DALTON CROSSAN
Sachem North, RB, 5-11, 185, Senior
He switched from tailback to quarterback when his brother, Trent, was injured in Week 4. That made him Sachem North’s primary running threat, and even though teams stacked defenses against him, Crossan rushed for 2,216 yards, averaged more than 10 yards per carry, scored a school-record 38 touchdowns and led the Flaming Arrows into the Suffolk I championship game for a third straight season. Just as with the Hansen Award, he shared the Suffolk County Running Back Award with Floyd’s Stacey Bedell. Crossan is strongly considering a lacrosse scholarship to Michigan, but also has drawn interest from several schools to play football.

RON DENIG
Newfield, LB, 6-0, 220, Senior
Leader on and off field for first-time Long Island champion Wolverines. Made 146 tackles, 11 for losses, including two sacks. Also knocked down four passes, intercepted one and caused four fumbles. Bruising fullback ran for 551 yards and 5 touchdowns.

MARK ELLIS
Garden City, DB, 5-9, 165, Senior
Thorp Award finalist. Sure tackler and shutdown cornerback. Made four interceptions, returning two for TDs in back-to-back playoff games. Ellis scored school-record 21 TDs. Among his 997 yards rushing was a school-record 293 vs. Long Beach.

STEVEN FERREIRA
Sayville, QB, 6-1, 180, Senior
Became Long Island’s all-time career leader for yards passing (6,411) and TDs (73). Led Golden Flashes to 12-0 record, Long Island Class III Championship and Rutgers Trophy. For the season, threw for 2,443 yards and 29 TDs with only five INTs.

RYAN FREDERICKS
Lawrence, All-Purpose, 5-8, 195, Senior
Rushed for nearly 1,600 yards, including 119 in record 78-61 loss to Sayville in LIC. Scored 29 TDs. Defensively, made 55 tackles from his strong safety spot, with four forced fumbles and three interceptions. Brother Ryan a 2nd-team All-L.I. selection.

MIKE GILBERT
Garden City, OL, 6-3, 275, Senior
Outstanding two-way tackle who won Martone Award as Nassau’s top lineman. His run-blocking helped 11-1 Trojans gain 2,426 yards. Defensively, made 42 tackles, 10 for losses, with two sacks for a unit that allowed Long Island-best 5.3 ppg.

DARIUS GREENE
Longwood, DL, 6-2, 275, Senior
Won Zellner Award as Suffolk’s top lineman. Two-way standout who was particularly dominant on defense where most teams simply ran away from him. Greene made 61 tackles, an impressive 17 for losses. Had five sacks and batted down three passes.

TOM HANNAN
Sayville, DB, 5-8, 175, Senior
Led an opportunistic defense with five interceptions and was third on team with four sacks. Made 24 tackles and forced one fumble. Favorite receiver of record-setting QB Steven Ferreira with team-high 43 receptions for 915 yards and 11 touchdowns.

ROBBIE HEALY
East Meadow, RB, 5-9, 165, Senior
Switched from wide receiver to wingback so he’d get more touches, and responded with record-breaking season. Scored Nassau County-record 236 points and 38 touchdowns, 27 of them coming on the ground. Rushed for 1,790 yards, and was also a receiving threat with nine TD catches. Came up huge in the playoffs, catching touchdown passes of 63 and 53 in 34-33 Nassau I championship-game victory over two-time defending L.I. champion Freeport. In another thriller, a 54-47 loss to Floyd in LIC, Healy rushed for 171 yards and a touchdown, caught a 31-yard TD pass, scored the game-tying 2-point conversion late in the fourth quarter and had a 51-yard kickoff return. “Robbie is a genius with the football,” said East Meadow coach Vinny Mascia. Also a stellar defensive back, Healy tipped away a potential game-tying touchdown pass in the end zone against Freeport in the fourth quarter of the county championship game.

EVAN KAPPATOS
Syosset, LB, 6-0, 235, Senior
First three-time winner of Piner Award as Nassau’s top LB. Four- year starter, three-time All-County and two-time All-Long Island pick. Made 106 tackles with two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Effective blocker on offensive line, also played running back.

SEAN KARL
Eastport-South Manor, OL, 6-6, 300, Senior
One major recruiting web site ranked him No. 60 in the country for offensive tackles and fourth-best in state. Also played defense, with 50 tackles, 11 for losses, and four sacks. Made early verbal commitment to Virginia.

DEVANTE MCFARLANE
Half Hollow Hills West, LB, 6-1, 195, Senior
Explosive two-way player with exceptional speed. Hard tackler, forced three fumbles and recovered one. Also played quarterback, running back and receiver, producing 27 TDs and 1,952 yards. Made preseason verbal commitment to Syracuse.

PAT MCHUGH
St. Anthony’s, DL, 6-2, 250, Senior
Anchored a defensive line that excelled all season, allowing the Friars to keep it close when their offense struggled. Equally impressive against run or as pass rusher. McHugh made 86 tackles, an impressive 19 for losses, with five sacks.

DOM MORALES
East Meadow, DL, 6-1, 265, Senior
Because Jets set Nassau scoring record with 544 points, the defense was overlooked. But Morales came up big in big spots as East Meadow captured Nassau I championship. Made 40 tackles with three sacks. All-County and Martone finalist.

RYAN NORTON
Garden City, K, 6-0, 175, Senior
With five field goals and 49 of 51 extra points, Norton became Nassau’s all-time career leader in kicking points with 133. Gave Trojans good field position all season with booming kicks (45 touchbacks). Started every game at safety.

OMARI PALMER
Longwood, OL, 6-3, 310, Senior
Pancake-blocking tackle for Lions’ run-oriented offense that beat Long Island champion Floyd, 14-12, in Week 2 before losing, 19-13, in playoffs. Also made 22 tackles with two sacks. Committed early to Syracuse, which likes him on offensive line.

VINNY PROVENZANO
Sachem North, DL, 6-0, 185, Senior
A real force off the edge, where he used his quickness to beat bigger offensive linemen. Made 80 tackles, blocked a punt and recovered a fumble. Occasionally dropped back in pass coverage where he made three interceptions.

MICHAEL RICHARDSON
West Babylon, WR, 6-0, 165, Senior
Explosive and versatile, Richardson won the Suffolk County receiver and defensive back awards. Had 26 catches for 664 yards (25.5 average) with five TDs. Made 30 tackles with six interceptions, one returned for a touchdown.

MIKE SILVA
Newfield, DB, 5-8, 165, Senior
Nose for the ball at cornerback with 57 tackles, four interceptions (one returned 95 yards for TD) and 12 passes knocked down. Versatile offensive threat who accumulated 1,053 yards rushing with 8 TDs, 139 receiving and 355 passing.

NICK WAGNER
Glenn, DB, 5-10, 180, Senior
Set three records in Knights’ second straight LIC — 60-yard punt return for TD; 68-yard interception return for TD, and three INTs. Had seven picks for season. Glenn’s leading receiver with 39 receptions for 819 yards and 15 TDs.

NASSAU COACH OF YEAR: VINNY MASCIA
East Meadow
Preseason decision to switch Robbie Healy from receiver to wingback to get Healy more touches helped Jets score more points in a season (544) than any team in Nassau history. Directed East Meadow to 10-2 record and Nassau I title.

SUFFOLK COACH OF YEAR: JOE PICCINNINI
Newfield
Guided a No. 5 playoff seed to first Suffolk County and Long Island Championship in school history. Along the way, Wolverines had to knock off No. 1 seed West Babylon, No. 2 seed East Islip and previously unbeaten Garden City.
