Brandon Nieves' block, Brendan Hegarty's TD leads Ward Melville
Brandon Nieves blocked a 38-yard field goal attempt in overtime and Jake Biro followed with an 18-yard scramble to set up the winning 1-yard touchdown run by Brendan Hegarty as Ward Melville rallied to beat Lindenhurst, 27-21, Saturday in Suffolk I football.
Biro connected with Brendan Dooley for a 24-yard TD pass late in the third quarter to tie the score as Ward Melville (4-1) erased a 21-0 second-quarter deficit. Biro completed 15 of 25 passes for 149 yards and rushed for 115 yards. Hegarty had 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Lindenhurst is 1-4.
Half Hollow Hills East 41, Patchogue-Medford 40: R.J. Nitti completed 13 of 22 for 325 yards and three TDs, and ran for 44 yards and a score to lead Hills East (2-3). Nitti hit Dan Bockelman for a 79-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to create the final margin for the Thunderbirds. Connor Coughlin's 24-yard TD pass to Jack Keough had given the Raiders a 40-35 lead. Devin McDonald had four catches for 98 yards and a TD, and D.J. Paul had two catches for 84 yards and a score for Hills East.
Northport 33, Sachem North 10: John Trainor rushed for 193 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries to lead Northport (3-2). North is 4-1.Commack 44, Central Islip 12: John Donovan ran for 152 yards and three TDs, all in the first half, to lead Commack (3-2). Donovan also made 10 tackles. Jake Fritzsche ran for 130 yards and a TD. Central Islip is 0-5.Connetquot 49, Brentwood 7: Brian McKean completed 8 of 12 passes for 143 yards and four first-half TDs, and ran for 101 yards to lead Connetquot (5-0). James Higgins had three catches for 58 yards and two TDs, and Tyler Nason had three catches for 50 yards and two scores. Brentwood is 1-4.
