When an accurate passer and a reliable receiver build a strong chemistry, opposing defenses are in for a long day. That lesson is exactly what Carey football taught host Roosevelt on Saturday, as quarterback Chris Obertis and wide receiver Nicholas Medoro connected for three long touchdown passes to help lead the Seahawks to a 41-8 win.

Now seniors, the Obertis-Medoro battery has had plenty of time to charge. They started together in the same roles as freshmen on the junior varsity team back in 2021. After two years of JV ball and a year together as backups on the varsity team, Obertis and Medoro have taken their opportunity as starters to show off their strong rapport.

The duo connected for touchdowns of 62, 29 and 34 yards to bring the season touchdown total to five. Obertis finished 5-for-5 passing for 143 yards, and Medoro had the three touchdown catches for 125 yards.

“I think the biggest part is our chemistry,” Medoro said. “Chris played great today and I couldn’t do it without him. He’s been my quarterback since ninth grade. We have a really good connection, and he’s my guy.”

Carey (6-0) scored a touchdown on each of its first seven possessions in the first half. After wide receiver Max Wright rushed for a nine-yard touchdown on the opening drive, Obertis and Medoro took over. On the first play of the Seahawks’ next possession, Obertis fired one down the right seam and hit Medoro in stride over two defenders for a 62-yard score.

Up 14-0, Carey linebacker Mark Vera forced a fumble that defensive back Christian Todaro recovered to set up their offense with a short field. On the first play of the drive, Obertis deked out the safety with a pump-fake and fired it down the right sideline, where he dropped it perfectly into Medoro’s hands for a 29-yard touchdown.

After getting another stop on defense, Obertis found Medoro wide open off a hitch route to the right for a 34-yard touchdown to make it 27-0.

“It feels good because I’ve known [Medoro] for a really long time,” Obertis said. “Just from playing outside during recess and throwing to him, and now seeing that translate to a game, that’s a really good feeling.”

unior James McGrath rushed for a 19-yard touchdown — the first of his varsity career — on a jet sweep to go up 34-0. On the following defensive possession, McGrath intercepted a pass and returned it 38 yards and set up Carey with another short field.

“I saw that ball go up in the air and I called it,” McGrath said. “It was great to contribute and just make the most of my opportunities.”

Senior running back Joncarlo Carbone ripped off runs of 21 and 22 yards to set the offense up at the goal line before pounding it in from one yard out. Carbone finished the game with 87 rushing yards on eight carries and totaled three runs of 20 yards or longer.

“I was feeling good today; my O-line helped me,” Carbone said. “The whole line made huge holes and we got it done.”

For Roosevelt (3-3), Kenyen Brown had 11 carries for 70 yards, Elyjah McRae ran for a touchdown and Qamar McNeil punched in a two-point conversion rush.
