Carle Place/Wheatley beats Herricks
Jimmy Baxter scored on a four-yard touchdown run on the last play of the third quarter to give Carle Place / Wheatley the lead for good in a 29-24 win over Herricks Saturday in Nassau II football. Baxter's run gave Carle Place/Wheatley (1-0) a 22-18 lead.
Herricks' Chris Rivera returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter 100 yards to give Herricks a nine-point lead. Chris Comito rushed for 142 yards on 23 carries and two TDs and added 74 yards on four catches with a TD. Baxter was 7-for-11 with 102 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Cassale had five solo tackles and three assists in the win. Herricks is 0-1.
New Hyde Park 42, Great Neck South 8: Fran Terrero rushed for 83 yards on five carries with three TDs and scored on a 77-yard reception for New Hyde Park (1-0). Nick Perrone went 7 of 11 for 112 yards with a TD. Josh Lee had a sack and fumble recovery in the win. GNS is 0-1.
Carey 39, Jericho 14: Carey (1-0) converted three turnovers into 19 first-half points. Mike Locicero passed for 119 yards with two TDs and rushed for a TD. Steven Marino had 55 rushing yards with a TD and 53 receiving yards with a TD.
Elmont 6, Long Beach 0: Qusarn Caldwell hit Ben Odugbesan for a 38-yard TD with 2:30 left in the second quarter for Elmont (1-0). Nick St. Louis had a sack and an interception in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Caldwell also had an interception to end the first half.
Mepham 14, Bellmore JFK 0: Shane Agostino rushed for a 25-yard TD with five minutes remaining in the second quarter and Kevin Tauriello added a 1-yard TD run with five minutes left in the game for Mepham (1-0). Agostino finished with five carries for 62 yards, three receptions for 25 yards and two sacks. Kyle Berlin completed 7 of 16 for 95 yards. Nick Wenthen had nine tackles and Peter Grieco added eight tackles and two sacks.
Garden City 45, Westbury 0: Mark Ellis and Danny Miller each scored two rushing TDs for Garden City (1-0).
Wantagh 27, Calhoun 0: Brian Von Bargen had three receptions for 54 yards with two TDs and returned an interception 75 yards for a TD for Wantagh in Conference II. Matt Balzano scored on an 88-yard TD pass from Nick Mullen. Calhoun is 0-1.
