Coppola directs Garden City’s dominant ‘D’
Justin Coppola recovered two fumbles, leading Garden City’s defense that forced eight turnovers in a 35-0 win over Sewanhaka in Nassau II Saturday. Coppola’s fumble recovery midway through the first quarter set up Chris Mixon’s five-yard touchdown run that put Garden City ahead 13-0. Mixon scored from a yard out towards the end of the second quarter to give the Trojans a 20-0 lead. Joey D’Errico recovered a fumble late in the fourth quarter and, on the first offensive play after the turnover, ran 20 yards for a touchdown to give Garden City a 34-0 lead. Colin Hart, who ran for a touchdown, was the Trojans’ leading rusher with just 73 yards, thanks to the short fields created by the turnovers. Billy Rousakis made all five of his extra points for Garden City (7-0).
Long Beach 33, Great Neck North 13: Tyreek Bromley had seven carries for 109 yards and one touchdown to lead Long Beach (5-2). Sam Brown completed 3 of 9 passes for 27 yards and one touchdown along with three carries for 13 yards and one touchdown. Thomas Rutherig had two catches for 30 yards and two touchdowns.
MacArthur 35, Herricks 14: Calvin Louie ran 14 times for 158 yards and three touchdowns to lead MacArthur (4-3). After Kyle Acquavella’s one-yard touchdown rush opened the scoring, Louie strung together scoring runs of 14, 38 and five yards to give the Generals a 29-0 lead in the second quarter. Shortly after Louie’s third touchdown, Mike Maringelli intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards to set up Tom Cummings’ 5-yard run that capped MacArthur’s scoring four minutes before halftime. Cummings had 95 yards on 15 carries. Benny Orlando had an inteception, A.J. Lohmuller made six tackles and Jake Hunter added four tackles.
Carey 38, Manhasset 7: Tyler DeMeo opened up the game with a 90-yard kickoff return, sparking Carey (4-2). DeMeo had one catch for 70 yards and a touchdown. Dan Conte completed 3 of 8 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Shaheem Taylor-White had nine carries for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Barry Moore had one catch for 90 yards and one touchdown. Dylan Nagy had 5 1⁄2 tackles.
Calhoun 39, Jericho 14: Thomas Cummings ran 22 times for 175 yards and three touchdowns and had three interceptions to lead Calhoun (3-4). Ariel DeJesus and Thomas Casimano each ran for a touchdown.
