Newsday's All-Long Island boys soccer team 2018

Long Island Player of the Year: Henry Martinez, Amityville, F, Sr.

The versatile Martinez did a little bit of everything this season and was at his best during hi team's biggest moments.

He had 15 goals and six assists, including both goals in Amityville's 2-1 state-title victory over Somers. He also scored in the Warriors' state semifinal victory and in their Long Island Championship victory over Mepham.

"He's amazing," coach Mike Abbondonolo said. "In years past, he has been a little bit underrated doing the hard work, but he's got everything. He can do anything you want. If you need him to win balls in the air, he can. If you need someone to score or defend, he can do that because he's just pure quality. I don't know if we'll get a player like that again."

Nassau Player of the Year: Andrew Weiner, Mepham, Sr.

Though he led Nassau County in scoring, the Hofstra-bound senior was most proud of a team feat. His 22 goals helped the Pirates go 15-2-1 and win the county title, after going 7-5-3 the year before. Weiner scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over top-seeded Garden City, the reigning Long Island champion. "He's mature, he's able to combine with players and really builds his teammates up," coach Zachary Gosse after the county championship. "The other players are better because they have a player like him around them." Weiner also had nine assists, as his skill on the ball was essential to Mepham's possession-based approach.

"He's an excellent finisher and a great athlete," Gosse said. "He also takes the game very seriously. He wants to get better and he wants the team to be better."

He did both this season. 

James Basile, Garden City, M, Sr.

A stalwart in the midfield, he had 12 goals and four assists.

Jevon Burke, St. Anthony’s, F, Sr.

Led the CHSAA with 16 goals and helped the Friars reach the league title game.

Matt Cozetti, Commack, F, Sr.

Had 14 goals and nine assists to help the Cougars finish the regular season unbeaten.

Rolman Guardado, Amityville, F, Sr.

Scored 22 goals to go along with 14 assists for the state champions.

Kymani Hines, Amityville, F, Sr.

The former Jamaica Under-17 national player team was a force for Amityville, scoring 21 goals and adding 14 assists.

Mauricio Puerto-Quintanilla, Lawrence, F, Jr.

Had 15 goals and six assists to lead Lawrence to the county semifinals.

Lorenzo Selini, Newfield, F, Soph.

Led Suffolk with 21 assists and also scored eight goals for the county finalists.

Brendan Slattery, Chaminade, F, Sr.

Had 11 goals and five assists for CHSAA state champion Flyers.

Ben Szemerenyi, Chaminade, F, Sr.

Helped Chaminade earn another Catholic state title by scoring 11 goals, including the match-winner in the title game.

Erick Turcios, Westbury, F, Sr.

Dynamic player scored 16 goals.
