Steven Ferreira, the most prolific quarterback in Long Island history, capped his magnificent career by winning the Boomer Esiason Award as Suffolk County's most outstanding quarterback.

Ferreira, a 6-1, 185-pound senior, was presented the award at Monday night's Suffolk County Coaches Association dinner. Justin Honce of Bellport was second in the voting and Rich Czeczotka of Glenn was third.

In leading Sayville to a 12-0 record, the Long Island Class III championship and the 2011 Rutgers Trophy, Ferreira completed 139 of 216 passes (64.4 percent) for 2,443 yards with 29 touchdowns and five interceptions.

He passed Tony Capozzoli (St. Dominic 1972-75) twice during the season to become Long Island's all-time career leader in yardage (6,411) and touchdown passes (73).

On Oct. 15, Ferreira hit James Rupp for a 56-yard touchdown pass to surpass Capozzoli's yardage mark of 5,376. On Nov. 12, he connected with Tom Hannan on a 63-yard scoring play for his 69th career TD pass, one more than Capozzoli.

"They've been his go-to guys his whole career," Sayville coach Rob Hoss said. "It's nice to share the records with them."

Ferreira also shared the ball Nov. 27 in the Long Island Class III championship game.

He passed for 225 yards and two touchdowns, but more importantly, he directed a dynamic and balanced offense that produced 384 rushing yards as the Golden Flashes defeated Lawrence, 78-61, in the highest-scoring varsity football game in Long Island history.

Richardson snags two. Michael Richardson (West Babylon) won the receiver and defensive back awards and Stacey Bedell (Floyd) and Dalton Crossan (Sachem North) shared the running back award.
