St. Anthony's falls to Iona Prep for second-straight loss
St. Anthony's entered this season on a school-record 29-game winning streak. Things are a little different this season. The Friars are now on a two-game losing streak.
St. Anthony's, the No. 1 seed in the CHSFL, lost a road game Saturday to the league's No. 2 seed Iona Prep, 30-28, at the New Rochelle school.
This follows the Friars' home loss last Friday night, 59-21, to New Jersey powerhouse Bergen Catholic.
Iona Prep (2-0) beat the Friars for the first time since the 2008 CHSFL championship game. The Gaels outgained St. Anthony's 421-277 and won the turnover battle with a forced fumble and recovery by Michael Sullivan in the fourth quarter. The Friars had only 27 yards in the fourth quarter.
Jordan Gowins scored two touchdowns for St. Anthony's, on runs of 32 and 10 yards. Brendan Femiano returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Iona Prep quarterback Mario Biaggi rushed for 162 yards and a touchdown and also threw for another 126 yards.
Kellenberg 46, Holy Trinity 20: Junior quarterback Kyle Driscoll led Kellenberg (1-1, 1-0 CHSFL) to a league victory over Holy Trinity (1-1, 0-1). Driscoll was 8-for-10 passing for 152 yards and rushed for a TD. Nick Rizzo and Rory Walsh each scored two touchdowns. Matthew Perno's 47-yard TD run gave Kellenberg a 19-0 lead early in the second quarter. Billy Meditz's 64-yard TD interception in the fourth quarter halted a potential Holy Trinity comeback. Tom Blau led the Firebirds defense with 12 tackles and Ryan Williams made two sacks.
Chaminade 48, Fordham Prep 7: Rob Speranza rushed four times for 63 yards and scored touchdowns of 32, 1 and 15 yards in the first quarter to lead Chaminade (2-0). Quarterback Sean Cerrone was 3-for-4 with 83 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown pass to Chris Gallic.
