Three takeaways from Week 2 of the Long Island high school football season
1. Record-setting week
Farmingdale coach Buddy Krumenacker became the second football coach in Long Island history to record his 300th win. He did so in the Dalers’ 14-6 victory over Port Washington in Nassau Conference I. Krumenacker has a record of 300-101-11 over 43 years, the last 32 coming at Farmingdale. . . Garden City set the record for the longest unbeaten streak in Long Island history when it topped Manhasset, 29-14, earning its 45th straight win. South Side was 37-0-7 from 1944-1950. Garden City coach Dave Ettinger improved his record to 100-3 in 10 years, the highest winning percentage (.971) of any football coach with at least 100 wins in state history.
2. Streak busters
It’s a good week in Amityville. The football team snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 27-24 win over Kings Park on Friday.
3. Running backs to watch
Here are your must-see running backs on Long Island: Three-year starter and two-time Hansen Award finalist Kyle Messina of Sayville has totaled 362 yards and six TDs on 41 carries in the Golden Flashes’ 2-0 start. Ja’Quan Thomas of Floyd has rushed for 313 yards and five TDs on 44 carries. Tyler Villalta of Massapequa has 386 yards and nine TDs on 44 carries in three games.
