It took a while to get going. But then Mikayla Camp finally beat Port Washington goalkeeper Sailor Engel almost 28 minutes in, and Syosset settled into the kind of soccer form Tuesday that makes it a threat to pull off a Nassau Class AA repeat feat.

Syosset claimed a 4-0, Conference AA-I home win behind two goals from Camp, a goal and two assists from Emma Romano and two assists from Marley Altarac.

"We’re very hungry and we want to succeed very, very far and do the best of our abilities," said Romano, a senior right back/midfielder. "Together we can accomplish that. We’re a very hard-working team."

Syosset (6-3-1, 6-2-1) has won two of the last three AA titles. Only Massapequa, which took the other, is ahead in AA-I, at 8-0. It beat Syosset, 1-0, on Sept. 24. The rematch is Oct. 14 at Massapequa. Oceanside is also 6-2-1 in AA-I, including a 1-0 win and a 2-2 draw against Syosset.

"We’re progressing in specific parts of our overall team performance in preparation for the playoffs," coach Joe Marchetta said. "Those are really big positives in our perspective."

Eve Waldhauser made three saves in the shutout against Port Washington (2-6-1, 2-5-1).

Camp scored that first goal from in front with 12:10 left in the first half, converting Altarac’s right-side feed.

"I had to time my run, and it was a great ball from her," Camp said.

Less than five minutes later, Romano scored from a good distance away on the right side, sailing the ball high toward the left side of the net.

In the second half, Romano’s shot ended up loose in the box, and Camp kicked it in with 23:07 remaining.

Romano, operating on the right side, sent the ball closer in on the right to her fraternal twin, Bella, for the final goal with 20:17 on the clock.

"It’s pretty special because it’s kind of twin power," said Emma, who has committed to Navy with her sister.

Despite allowing the four goals, Engel stood out with several impressive stops.

"It’s her first year on varsity, so she’s doing a phenomenal job for the first time stepping in," Vikings coach Lauren Brossard said. "There’s a bunch of new girls, so we’re still trying to work on our chemistry."
