Syosset's Elizabeth Choi sixth in state golf championship
Syosset sophomore Elizabeth Choi finished sixth in the state girls golf championship after shooting 4-over-par 76 Sunday at The College Golf Course at SUNY Delhi. Choi improved on her Day 1 score of 79 to finish with a two-day total of 155. Garden City Maroon junior Samantha Sessa shot 80 on Day 1 and 78 on Sunday for a 158 total to finish 11th.
For Suffolk, Smithtown West junior Kaitlin Clancy shot 77 on Day 1 and 81 on Day 2 for a 158. Though tying Sessa, Clancy finished 13th because of a tiebreaker. Smithtown West senior Victoria Snak shot 81-81 and finished 16th.
In the team competition, Section VIII (Nassau) finished third with 1,173 strokes. That is Nassau's best team score in the eight-year history of the state championship, according to Garden City Maroon coach Reid Sclafani. Section XI (Suffolk) finished fourth with 1,186.
Syosset's Emilie Cullen was Nassau's winner of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association sportsmanship award and Snak won the award for Suffolk.
Section V's Christine Schmitt shot 1-under 143 to win the state championship. Section V won the team competition with 1,118 strokes.
Burke eighth in Federation. Sayville junior Kyle Burke shot 84 on the par-71 Black Course at Bethpage State Park to finish eighth in the state Federation Cup on Sunday. Burke was the only Long Islander to compete in the tournament. Section III's Derek Bard won the Federation title with a 4-over 75.
