High school sports roundup: Soccer, volleyball, gymnastics, swimming
Jenna Biondo sent No. 2 North Babylon girls soccer to the Suffolk AAA semifinals by converting a penalty kick with 3:48 left in the second half, pushing the Bulldogs to a 1-0 win over No. 10 Smithtown East in the quarterfinals Thursday. Alexa Furman had five saves for a clean sheet. Madison Kelly had 12 saves for Smithtown East, which finishes the season with a 7-7-2 record. North Babylon (15-0-2) will host No. 3 Commack in the Suffolk AAA semifinal round on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Commack 2, Northport 1: Elena Dean scored the winner with six minutes left off a cross from Madison DiBartolo in No. 3 Commack’s win over No. 6 Northport in the quarterfinals of the Suffolk Class AAA playoffs. Bree Mender also scored off an assist from Sofia D’Alessandro for the Cougars (12-1-3). Brooke Heffernan scored for Northport (10-4-3).
Sachem East 3, Longwood 0: Vanessa Puerta scored 19 seconds into the first half and assisted Stephanie Tator’s second-half goal to lift No. 4 Sachem East to a Suffolk AAA quarterfinal win over No. 5 Longwood. Tator also assisted Camryn Goodman, who added another goal in the second half. Sophia Carpenito had two saves in the shutout win and Makenzi Hansen made 10 saves for Longwood, which finishes the season with a 9-5-1 record. Sachem East (13-2-1) will travel to No. 1 Ward Melville for the semifinal round Saturday at 2 p.m.

Massapequa 3, Syosset 2: Nicole Castonguay scored with six minutes left in the second overtime period to lead No. 3 Massapequa past No. 2 Syosset in the semifinals of the Nassau Class AAA playoffs. Olivia Trojanowski scored two goals and Reese Reustle made 10 saves. Massapequa (6-10-2) will face No. 1 Oceanside at Farmingdale State College in the finals at 7 p.m. on Monday. Alexa Baek and Gabriella Leone scored for Syosset, which finished 8-9-1.
West Islip 3, East Islip 2: Jenna Obloj scored the winning goal in overtime off an assist from Leah Tomeo to lead No. 2 West Islip over No. 3 East Islip in the Suffolk AA semifinals. Erin Palmeri scored the equalizer on a penalty kick with seven minutes left in regulation. Alex Livingston added a goal. West Islip (16-1-1) will face No. 1 Eastport-South Manor in the final at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Shoreham-Wading River High School. Alivia Ancona scored both goals for East Islip (11-3-1).

Brentwood 2, Smithtown East 0: Diego Argueta scored two goals and Brian Acosta made six saves for the shutout to lead No. 1 Brentwood past No. 8 Smithtown East in the quarterfinals of the Suffolk Class AAA playoffs. Nico Skartsiaris had 13 saves and stopped a penalty kick for Smithtown East, which finished 9-6-1. Brentwood (15-0-2) will host No. 4 Connetquot in the semifinals at noon on Sunday.
Whitman 3, Newfield 1: Jamith Jimenez, Gavin Supek and Otoniel Umana Alvarez scored one goal apiece to lead No. 3 Whitman over No. 11 Newfield in the quarterfinals of the Suffolk Class AAA playoffs. Alex Del Priore, Jerson Contreras and Michael Mannino added one assist each and Jayden Castro made a pair of saves in the win. Stephen Ingrasilino scored off an assist from Eli Rubio and John Caso made nine saves for Newfield, which finished 8-8-1. Whitman (11-5) will visit No. 2 Commack in the semifinals at noon on Sunday.

Lynbrook 3, Bethpage 2: Joe Woods had 25 kills to lead Lynbrook over Bethpage in a Nassau II play-in game, 25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 19-25, 15-10. Brady Rogan had 46 assists. Drew Malinka had 15 kills and four blocks. Bethpage finishes with a 4-13 record. Lynbrook (14-3) claims the No. 12 seed and will travel to No. 5 Calhoun at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Sewanhaka 3, Garden City 2: Irfaan Ali posted a double-double with 22 kills and 18 digs while Sebastian Polanco added 35 assists and nine digs to lead Sewanhaka to a 23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18, 15-7 win in Nassau II. Garden City finished 0-18-1. No. 11 Sewanhaka (14-3-1) will face No. 6 Valley Stream North at 2 p.m. Saturday in the first round of the Nassau II playoffs.

West Islip 3, Hauppauge 1: Julia Kalinowski had 13 kills and three aces to lead No. 4 West Islip to a 21-25, 25-18, 25-9, 25-18 win over No. 5 Hauppauge in the Suffolk Class AA quarterfinals. Mia Cuozzo and Emma Graziano each added eight kills and three aces. West Islip (13-2) will visit top-seeded Half Hollow Hills West in the semifinals at noon on Saturday. Hauppauge finished 9-6.

Brentwood 3, Lindenhurst 2: Angela Williams posted a double-double with 12 kills and 10 blocks while also serving an ace to lead No. 9 Brentwood past No. 8 Lindenhurst, 10-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-25, 15-12, in the first round of the Suffolk Class AAA playoffs. Janessa Love racked up 35 assists. Sofia Lopez Toro totaled 20 digs and two aces. Brentwood (9-8) will visit No. 1 Commack in the quarterfinals. Lindenhurst finished 9-8.

East Islip 157.8, North Babylon 151.75: East Islip’s Sophia Pepe took first on the vault (8.95), the bars (8.7) and the floor exercise (9.3) to lead East Islip (5-5) in its last duel meet of the season. North Babylon’s Juliana Kollman took first on beam (9.05) for the Bulldogs (4-6).

Wednesday’s Suffolk II Championship
Connetquot/East Islip won all three relays — the 200 medley relay (1:51.95), 200 freestyle relay (1:41.93) and the 400 freestyle relay (4:02.00) — in its Suffolk II girls swimming and diving championship win. Amanda Tedesco finished first in the 50 freestyle (25.29) and the 100 freestyle (55.16). Olivia Ferrentino placed first in 1-meter diving with a 225.40. Connetquot/East Islip finished first with 403 points, Ward Melville was second with 328 and Sachem East finished third with 219.
