Long Beach wrestling stays atop Big 10
1. LONG BEACH WRESTLING: The Marines captured their third straight Conference 2A dual meet title when they beat MacArthur, 63-13. Mark Rivera opened the dual with a pin at 220 pounds and Long Beach (12-0) never trailed. The Marines had eight pins in the match, including Tyreese Byron at 152.
2. WARD MELVILLE BOYS FENCING: Ward Melville defeated Half Hollow Hills, 20-7, and Sayville, 24-3, to clinch its ninth straight regular-season Suffolk title. The Patriots have won 137 consecutive matches.
3. BALDWIN GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Bruins improved to 10-0 with a 54-40 win over Gill St. Bernard’s School (N.J.) and a 77-39 win over East Meadow. Lames El Gammal paved the way against Gill St. Bernard’s, posting 15 points and 20 rebounds. Aziah Hudson averaged 21 points in the two wins.
4. EAST ISLIP GIRLS BOWLING: Olivia Lopera finished the regular season with a 217 average, the second highest among Suffolk girls. Lopera, sisters Lyndsay and Melissa Mavrich, Julia Bocamazo and Jenny Murphy are all within the top 12 in county averages as East Islip finished 12-0.
5. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN BOYS BASKETBALL: Indiana-bound guard Devonte Green scored 39 points and Charles Manning had 13 points, including the winning layup with 11 seconds remaining, as the Crusaders edged Sacred Heart, 73-72, on Martin Luther King Day in the prestigious Big Apple Invitational at Baruch College.
6. HUNTINGTON BOYS TRACK: Kyree Johnson ran a 34.03 in the 300 meters at the Molloy Stanner Games last weekend, the top time in the U.S. as of Friday night. Infinite Tucker ran a 1:20.54 in the 600 meters, also the top time in the U.S., according to the website Milesplit.
7. ST. ANTHONY’S BOYS SWIMMING: St. Anthony’s matchup with five-time defending state champion Fordham Prep was postponed and rescheduled for Monday at 5 p.m. It’s the final regular-season meet for senior standouts Sean Cannon, Tyler Meyers and Noah Chernik.
8. HALF HOLLOW HILLS BOYS SWIMMING: Half Hollow Hills won its 10th consecutive regular-season Suffolk I title after defeating Ward Melville, 99-84. Senior Justin Chang had two state qualifying times.
9. LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN GIRLS BASKETBALL: Sarah Mortensen continues to dominate against some of the nation’s top competition. She scored 40 points, shot 13-for-16 from the field, and grabbed 12 rebounds to lift the Crusaders to a 69-56 win over Oregon City, the top-ranked team in the state of Oregon, in the Rose Classic Super Jam in Brooklyn.
10. HALF HOLLOW HILLS GIRLS FENCING: Half Hollow Hills improved to 15-0 with wins over Ward Melville, 17-10, and Brentwood, 18-9. The win over Ward Melville clinched the first Suffolk regular-season title in the program’s nine-year history
