Massapequa boys soccer climbs in Big 10 after Class AA LI title

The Flaming Arrows are headed back to the state tournament. Kyle Larkin scored the deciding goal in a 3-2 win over Mamaroneck in the Class A regional final, extending Sachem East's win streak to 49 games and earning them a berth in Saturday's state semifinals at Cicero-North Syracuse. The Flaming Arrows are the two-time defending state champions.
The Panthers won for the 21st straight game, Long Island's longest current football win streak. Captain Luke Zappia averaged 12 yards per carry and scored on a 20-yard first quarter run and added two sacks as Babylon beat East Hampton, 53-8, in a Suffolk IV quarterfinal. The Panthers will host Shoreham-Wading River Friday at 6 p.m.
St. Anthony's (22-1-1) won its first boys soccer state championship since 2008 yesterday with a 2-0 victory over St. Francis Prep, getting goals from TJ Butzke and Nick Cestaro. Josh Weiss recorded 21 shutouts this season, breaking the school record of 16. The Friars scored 71 goals and allowed only three.
Nicholas Bernhard and Brian Nichtern scored two goals apiece, as the Chiefs captured the Class AA Long Island championship, defeating Smithtown West, 5-1. Massapequa will play Monroe-Woodbury at 11:15 a.m. Saturday at Middletown in a state semifinal.
5. MASSAPEQUA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Justine Abbate had 37 kills as the Chiefs beat Smithtown East to claim the Long Island Class AA title in four games. Massapequa travels to the state tournament for the first time since they earned the crown in 2007. The Chiefs have won the Nassau title for 14 straight years.
The Friars beat Farrell 39-14 in the quarterfinal round of the CHSFL Class AAA playoffs. They will meet Stepinac in a Saturday semifinal at 2 p.m. in South Huntington.
The passion flows in Daler land as Farmingdale continues its dominant roll through Nassau I. The Dale beat Valley Stream Central, 56-7, in a Nassau I quarterfinal as Curtis Jenkins rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns. Farmingdale (9-0) will meet Syosset at Hofstra on Saturday at 5 p.m.
8. BELLMORE JFK BOYS VOLLEYBALL
The Cougars improved to 20-0 and won their second consecutive Long Island championship. They carry a 43-match win streak into the state tournament in Glen Falls this weekend.
9. KINGS PARK GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
The undefeated Kingsmen won the Long Island Class B title for the third year in a row. They beat Long Beach in straight sets to advance to the state tournament in Glens Falls. Kendall Corcoran led the way with 36 assists for the defending champions.
10. WARD MELVILLE GIRLS SWIMMING
The Patriots earned the Suffolk championship at SuffolkCC-Brentwood over the weekend by grabbing first place in the 200-yard medley, and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Junior Cassandra Willie swam a 58.14 in the butterfly and sophomore Casey Gavigan timed a 58.17 in the 100 backstroke to claim individual titles.
