Sachem East field hockey leads first Fall Big 10

1. SACHEM EAST FIELD HOCKEY: The Flaming Arrows had a perfect season, going 22-0 and dominating from start to finish in capturing a second consecutive Class A state championship in 2012. Sachem East returns a star-studded core, led by All-Long Islanders Katie Trombetta, Cara Trombetta and Katie Doherty. A likely three-peat makes Sachem East No. 1 in the preseason BIG 10.
2. BRENTWOOD BOYS SOCCER: The explosive Ever Torres, a junior captain, continues to evolve into one of the best players on Long Island. Alejandro Ruiz and Noel Rios will lead the defending Class AA Long Island champions on defense. Senior midfielder Eric Molina said it's a goal of his to end his varsity career with a state title.
3. SOUTH SIDE GIRLS SOCCER: The Cyclones have long been the class of Class A and proved it again last season, winning its 17th state championship and seventh in nine years. The return of superstars Christina Klaum and Keri Cavallo has some thinking South Side, ranked 11th in the country, could be even better this year.
4. MILLER PLACE FIELD HOCKEY: The Panthers (19-1) blew through the regular season, captured their first Long Island title since 2005 and reached the state Class B semifinals in 2012. Miller Place will be a powerhouse behind standouts Ally Hutzler and Maggie Revera.
5. SACHEM NORTH FOOTBALL: A sturdy line, a bevy of skill position players led by Malik Pierre and Trent Crossan and the Flaming Arrows can win the school's first LIC. This team is loaded with blue chip prospects.
6. HALF HOLLOW HILLS EAST GIRLS TENNIS: Two-time Suffolk titlist is riding a 33-match win streak against Suffolk opponents. They have top singles, Vanessa Scott and two-time county doubles champion Alison Huber.
7. LAWRENCE FOOTBALL: Record-breaking quarterback Joe Capobianco leads the defending Long Island Class III champions, who were 12-0 last season. A talented roster with linebacker Simon Jones and halfback Jordan Fredericks and the Golden Tornadoes can win it all.
8. NORTHPORT BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: The Tigers be dominant again. Mike Branigan and Tim McGowan return. Northport finished third overall and first among LI teams at last season's state championships.
9. ST. ANTHONY'S GIRLS SOCCER: The Friars cruised last year, going 18-2-1 to capture a second straight state CHSAA championship, and enter this season ranked 19th in the country. St. Anthony's is buoyed by the return of top scorer Tricia Hanley.
10. ST. ANTHONY'S BOYS SOCCER: Senior captains Justin Carfora and Nick Cestaro are experienced leaders who hope to guide the Friars toward a CHSAA title. Junior Beau Hornberger is a standout defender.
