Sayville football remains atop Big 10

1. SAYVILLE FOOTBALL
The Golden Flashes have the longest winning streak on Long Island at 20 games after a 42-0 shutout of West Babylon in a Suffolk III quarterfinal. Senior quarterback Jack Coan, heading to Wisconsin, threw for four touchdowns in the win. Long Island’s all-time leader for touchdown passes has 122 in his career. Sayville hosts Rocky Point at 1 p.m. Saturday in a semifinal.
2. CONNETQUOT GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
The Thunderbirds have cruised since dropping their lone set of the season to Smithtown East on Oct. 10, sweeping each opponent. Mackenzie Cole (22 digs) and Nicole Migliozzi (20 assists) had huge performances against Commack in the Suffolk AA quarterfinal win.
3. SACHEM NORTH BOYS VOLLEYBALL
The Flaming Arrows enter the postseason on a 52-match win streak against Long Island competition. The two-time reigning Long Island champions are the top seed in the Suffolk “A” playoffs.
4. WARD MELVILLE FIELD HOCKEY
The defending Long Island Class A champions won their second consecutive title with a 6-0 win over Baldwin. Ward Melville has outscored their opponents 81-6 margin this season. The Patriots are led by junior forward Kerri Thornton, who has totaled 21 goals and 12 assists.
5. MASSAPEQUA GIRLS SOCCER
The Chiefs return to Cortland looking for a fourth straight state championship this weekend after defeating Northport, 3-2, for the Long Island championship They’re led by Hope Breslin, Long Island’s leading scorer with 33 goals.
6. SHOREHAM-WADING RIVER GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Katherine Lee’s 18:10.37 in the Class B race at the Suffolk State Qualifier broke the Suffolk County Sunken Meadow 5K record of 18:13.4, set by Harborfields’ Kelsey Margey in 2010, according to suffolkxctf.com. Shoreham-Wading River had four runners in the top 10 and won Class B with 26 points.
7. CHAMINADE BOYS SOCCER
The Flyers tied and lost to St. Anthony’s in the regular season but won when it mattered most: in the CHSAA final. Matt Vowinkel scored twice, his second goal in double overtime giving Chaminade a 2-1 victory. The Flyers beat St. Anthony’s in last year’s championship as well.
8. AMITYVILLE BOYS SOCCER
For the second straight year, Amityville advanced to the state semifinals with a thrilling win in the Long Island championship. Last year, freshman Rolman Guardado delivered the overtime winner. This time, seventh-grader Juan Ponce converted the clinching penalty kick to defeat Glen Cove.
9. MASSAPEQUA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Champs of Nassau AA for the 17th consecutive season, the Chiefs are still hungry. Jamie Smith, perhaps Long Island’s best court general, had 18 assists and 10 kills in the semifinals against Long Beach.
10. SACRED HEART GIRLS SOCCER
After knocking off St. Anthony’s in penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation, Sacred Heart downed Christ the King in the CHSAA state semifinal, 7-0. Victoria Minda had three goals and Caitlin Kennedy added two, raising her season total to 26.
