Meyers, Meyer get Sayville past Kings Park
Entering Saturday, there was a three-way tie between the top softball teams in Suffolk League V for first place. Islip, Sayville and Kings Park all started the day with 6-1 league records, each beating one another to add their only league losses on the season.
So for Sayville, a win, would not only claim sole possession of first in its league, but also carry bragging rights for the rest of the year as the only team in league V to defeat Kings Park not once, but twice.
Behind stellar pitching by Catherine Meyers, allowing no runs and Kate Meyer, hitting a double to score two RBIs, Sayville shut out Kings Park, 4-0, to take the top spot in league at Kings Park High School.
“I think Kings Park is very good team, I think we will be seeing them in [the] playoffs,” coach Tiffany Rowan said. “Today I think the sun and the wind kind of came into play a little today and we capitalized a little on some of that.”
Both teams came out slow early on with excellent pitching and defense on both sides from Meyers (eight strikeouts) and Kings Park's Grace Heim (two strikeouts).
“I just kind of went ahead in the count,” Meyers said. “I tried to throw strikes, not walk anyone and not let anyone get hits.”
She helped keep her team in the game until Meyer found her bat and hit a deep shot into rightfield which brought home teammates Meyers and Amanda Anderson to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.
“When I was at the plate I was just trying to be as relaxed as possible,” Meyer said. “Deep down I knew I could hit the ball and I had enough confidence to put it out there.”
After her double , Meyer was brought home off the bat of Bella Lundquist when Kings Park committed an E7 in leftfield to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of Sayville.
Later in the sixth inning Kristen Tellier hit a single to bring home Lundquist to make the score 4-0. “Coach Rowan has been telling us line drives are key. Before I got up to bat I was just thinking line drive . . . I hit it up the middle and it worked,” Tellier said.
Neither team would score again as Sayville secured the win and top spot in League V with a 7-1 record while Kings Park falls to third with a 6-2 record.
“Communication was key in this game,” Tellier said. “We were all talking to each other in the outfield, infield, pitching, catching and on the bench. Everyone was just talking. It’s what worked.”
