Wantagh football tops final Fall Big 10
1. WANTAGH FOOTBALL
Wantagh earned the Fall BIG 10 championship with a perfect 12-0 season in Class III. The Warriors allowed 70 points and shut out three playoff opponents. They beat East Islip, 21-14, in the L.I. Class III final. The defense was keyed by Gavin Casey, Joe Valenti, Anthony D’Onofrio, Jack LaVache, Sean Colbert and Jimmy Joyce. Keith Sachs was named Newsday’s Coach of the Year.
2. EASTPORT-SOUTH MANOR BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Eastport-South Manor earned the state title with a dominant performance by Ryan Byrne that led the Sharks to their first ever Division II crown. Byrne had 30 kills and Tommy Ogeka had 10 kills and nine digs for ESM (15-2) in its win over Spencerport.
3. LONG BEACH GIRLS SWIMMING
Kristen Romano set two individual records in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100 backstroke, Maggie Aroesty improved on her own in the 100 breaststroke and they combined with Caroline Farrell and Joan Cash for a record-setting 200 medley relay and a victory in the 400 free relay at the state championships. The Marines won six of 12 swimming events.
4. CHAMINADE BOYS SOCCER
Chaminade won the CHSAA state title with a 6-0 win over Canisius of Buffalo. The Flyers tied and lost to St. Anthony’s during the season but won in the CHSAA final. Matt Vowinkel scored twice, his second goal coming in double overtime for a 2-1 win over St. Anthony’s.
5. GARDEN CITY FOOTBALL
Garden City went undefeated at 12-0 and rolled to the L.I. Class II title with a 13-6 win over Half Hollow Hills West. The Trojans defense shut down the prolific Hills West offense behind All-LI Island junior end Andrew DeSantis. Dave Ettinger was named Newsday’s Coach of the Year.
6. CONNETQUOT GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Connetquot was undefeated on Long Island and won the Class AA title. The Thunderbirds lost to Penfield in the state final. They return a lot of talent in Mackenzie Cole, Nicole Migliozzi and Mackenzie Taylor.
7. SHOREHAM-WADING RIVER GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
The Wildcats won the state Class B public school championship with 51 points and Katherine Lee won the individual championship in 17:53.7. Lee went on to win the New York Nike regional qualifier in 17:44.8.
8. SACRED HEART GIRLS SOCCER
Kristen McArdle scored the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Nardin Academy (Buffalo) at Niagara Univ. to capture the school’s first state title since 2008. Sacred Heart recorded its fifth straight shutout.
9. MASSAPEQUA GIRLS SOCCER
The Chiefs lost to Arlington, 2-1, in double overtime to snap a streak of three straight state Class AA titles. Massapequa has won four straight Long Island crowns and 13 of the last 14 Nassau championships. They’ll have big shoes to fill as the Chiefs graduate Hope Breslin, the program’s all-time leading scorer with 82 goals.
10. GARDEN CITY FIELD HOCKEY
The Trojans breezed past Vestal, 3-1, in the state Class B semifinal, before falling to Lakeland, 1-0, in the state B final. Taylor Gladd led Nassau in points with 27, tallying 14 goals and 13 assists, while Devon Heaney and Emily Clarke were second in points with 20, compiling 12 goals and eight assists apiece.
On the cusp: Smithtown West boys volleyball, Kings Park girls volleyball, Smithtown boys cross country and Commack girls tennis.
