Long Island wrestling top 10

We have a new No. 1 team in the Big 10, and it's the grapplers from Glenn. Despite two easy wins last week for the former No. 1 team, Half Hollow Hills West boys basketball, the Knights moved into the top spot after dominating the Smithtown West Tournament this past weekend.

Hauppauge also slid into the rankings at No. 10 on the back of its win at the Eastern States Classic.

So without any further delay, here is this week's top 10...

1. Glenn (7-0, 2-0 League VI) — The Knights had nine individual champions at the Smithtown West Tournament on Saturday. Jared Cheatham won the 171-pound class and was named Champion of Champions. Glenn (482.5) won the eight-team tournament by 136 points over second-place Connetquot. The Knights won six of the seven finals pitting them against Connetquot opponents.

On Wednesday, the Knights won their 45th straight dual meet — one shy of the fifth longest unbeaten streak in Suffolk history — with a 71-0 League VI victory over East Hampton/Bridgehampton/Pierson.

Next up for the Knights: Two tough League VI meets — at Westhampton tomorrow at 5:45 p.m., and home against Rocky Point (No. 3 on this list) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. — precede a tournament at Yonkers High School (Sec. I) on Saturday.

2. Hauppauge (8-0, 1-0 League V) — The Eagles finished as the top team at this weekend's Eastern States at Sullivan County Community College behind 96-pound champion Mark West. Hauppauge's 162.5 points were 25.5 more than second-place Rocky Point (No. 3 on this list). Ken Collado (119 pounds) and Chanse Menendez (171) each placed third, while Kevin Panebianco was fifth at 135. Hauppauge also won at Islip 49-6 on Wednesday in the League V opener.

Next up for the Eagles: Two League V matches — at Harborfields tomorrow at 4:30 p.m., and home against Eastport-South Manor on Friday at 6 p.m. — precede Saturday's trip to the Farmingdale Tournament.

3. Rocky Point (14-1, 2-0 League VI) — After a 50-15 League VI win over Miller Place on Wednesday, the Eagles took second at Eastern States, 25.5 points behind Hauppauge. Stephen Dutton (140 pounds) won the tournament for the second straight year, and Anthony Volpe took the 160-pound class to make Rocky Point one of two teams with two champions at the event (Johnson City of Sec. IV was the other). Billy Coggins placed second at 171 pounds.

Next up for the Eagles: They'll play host to Shoreham-Wading River at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow before preparing for Friday's trip to top-ranked Glenn at 4:30 p.m. — both League VI matches.

4. Wantagh (20-4, 2-0 Conference 3A) — The Warriors cruised to a 62-3 Conference 3A win over Lynbrook on Wednesday before traveling to the Virginia Duals on Friday. There, Wantagh went 1-2, losing to South Plainfield, N.J., 60-6, before bouncing back with a 59-15 win over Hopewell, Va., in the first round of the losers' bracket. Joe Barbato (103 pounds), Nick Fitzmaurice (145), James Corbett (160), Matt Loew (189) and Stephen English (285) each earned pins in the victory. The Warriors lost to Cox, Va., 49-22, to end their day. Kavanagh was 3-0 with two pins at the event.

Next up for the Warriors: They'll play host to conference foe Glen Cove on Wednesday before welcoming Plainedge to town at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in a match that will likely decide the Conference 3A crown.

5. Longwood (15-0, 1-0 League I) — The Lions knocked off Sachem East (No. 8 on this list) 38-25 on Wednesday behind Nicky Hall's pin of Sean O'Malley in 4:43 at 135 pounds. They finished sixth at Eastern States with 105.5 points. Patrick Jennings (152 pounds) and Ben Lee (285) led the way with fourth-place finishes.

Next up for the Lions: Two key League I matches — at home against Brentwood (No. 6 on this list) tomorrow at 6 p.m., and at Ward Melville Friday at 7 p.m.

6. Brentwood (9-4, 1-1 League I) — After a tough two-point loss (24-22) to Sachem East on Friday night, the Indians bounced back by winning the Rocky Gilmore Tournament at East Islip. They had four individual champions — Alex Gomez (119 pounds), pictured on top, Humberto Garcia (125), Carlos Hernandez (215) and Most Outstanding Wrestler David Chaverra at 112. Brentwood also defeated Commack on Wednesday, 31-13.

Next up for the Indians: They'll travel to Longwood (No. 5 on this list) tomorrow at 6 p.m. for a League I matchup, and then head to Copiague at 7:30 p.m. on Friday for a non-league affair against the Eagles.

7. St. Anthony's (9-3, 1-0 CHSAA) — The Friars won their own dual meet tournament this weekend with seven victories, including a 41-39 win over Sachem East and a 47-29 victory against Riverhead. Jimmy Morris (7-0), Chris Brienza (5-0) and Grant Greene (4-0) all went undefeated. The Sachem East win avenged a 53-18 loss to the Flaming Arrows on Dec. 19. St. Anthony's also defeated St. John the Baptist in the CHSAA opener, 51-23, on Wednesday.

Next up for the Friars: They're match against Holy Trinity, originally scheduled for tomorrow, will be a part of this weekend's CHSAA Duals at St. Anthony's.

8. Sachem East (17-2, 1-1 League I) — The Flaming Arrows dropped a 41-39 decision to St. Anthony's at the Friars' dual meet tournament, but defeated a tough Riverhead team 41-28. They dropped their League I opener to Longwood 32-22 on Wednesday, but bounced back with a 24-22 league win at Brentwood on Friday.  

Next up for the Flaming Arrows: Two League I matches loom this week — home against Ward Melville at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon, and at Patchogue-Medford at the same time on Friday. On Saturday, they'll host a tournament beginning at 8:30 a.m.

9. Massapequa (4-1, 3-0 Conference 1A) — The Chiefs won the Ted Peterson Tournament at Island Trees on Saturday by 18.5 points over Uniondale. Rudy Lanzilotta (119 pounds) and James Ondris (152) each won individual titles. Massapequa also won Conference 1A matches against East Meadow (32-22 on Friday) and Farmingdale (32-25 on Wednesday).

Next up for the Chiefs:  They'll take on Freeport at home 7 p.m. tomorrow night in a Conference 1A match, and then travel to Uniondale for the conference finale at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

10. Connetquot (3-0, 2-0 League II) — The Thunderbirds won two League II matches -- 59-6 over Whitman on Wednesday and 45-19 at Central Islip on Friday -- before placing second at the Smithtown West tournament on Saturday. James McCabe was Connetquot's long champion, as he earned the 119-pound title with a 15-2 win in the final.

Next up for the Thunderbirds: They'll play host to Bay Shore at 6 p.m. on Friday in a League II match and then travel to the Commack Tournament Saturday morning.

Wrestlers of the Week

Stephen Dutton, Rocky Point — The 140-pound senior defeated defending Division II state champion Derak Heyman of Tioga (Sec. IV), 3-1, to win the Eastern States title for the second straight year. Dutton also recorded two pins and a technical fall. Dutton's teammate Anthony Volpe won the 160-pound title with a 4-1 victory over Craig Scott of Palmyra Macedon (Sec. V), while Billy Coggins finished second at 171.

*Both Dutton and Volpe eclipsed 200 career wins at the tournament. They are only the third and fourth wrestlers in Suffolk history to acheive that feat behind Jesse Jantzen, a 2000 Shoreham-Wading River alum who had a Long Island-record 221 wins, and Ryan Patrovich, a 2006 Islip graduate who amassed 210 victories.

Mark West, Hauppauge — The 96-pound freshman recorded three major decisions and two pins, including a fall in 4:18 against Sayville's Matt Leshinger in the final, to earn the Eagles' only Eastern States crown on Saturday and move to 18-0 on the season.

Jake Smith, Smithtown West — The 189-pound senior defeated Glenn's Joe Giaramita 8-6 in the Smithtown West Tournament final on Saturday. Smith was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the event.

Chris Brienza, Jimmy Morris, Grant Greene, St. Anthony's — All three All State Friars —  Brienza (103 pounds), Morris (112) and Greene (119) — went undefeated at the St. Anthony's Duals this weekend. Morris went 7-0 with three pins, three technical falls and a major decision, Brienza went 5-0 with three technical falls and two pins, and Greene was 4-0 with two pins, a technical fall and a major decision.
