The American Hockey League on Wednesday suspended Islanders minor-leaguer Adam Beckman 10 games for physical abuse of an official.

But the Islanders confirmed on Thursday the organization will appeal that decision.

The 6-2, 182-pound Beckman crashed into referee Mike Dietrich while skating hard into the offensive zone midway through the third period of Bridgeport’s 5-2 loss to visiting Charlotte on Saturday. Dietrich flew into the left corner and remained on the ice while help was summoned from the bench.

Beckman reached Dietrich first, bending over to immediately apologize and check on the referee as other players began to surround him on the ice.

Dietrich eventually recovered and was able to finish the game on the ice.

The AHL said Beckman was suspended under league Rule 40.3.

Pending appeal, Beckman is set to miss Bridgeport’s final five games of this season as well as the next five games of any following season he plays.

Beckman is a pending restricted free agent with arbitration rights completing a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000 in the NHL and $125,000 in the AHL. Beckman, selected in the third round of the 2019 draft by the Wild, has played 23 NHL games, all with Minnesota.

The Islanders acquired him from the Devils organization on March 7 for defenseman Dennis Cholowski. It was president/general manager Lou Lamoriello’s only other deal prior to that day’s NHL trade deadline after sending Brock Nelson to the Avalanche.
