Darroll Powe leaves game after hitting head on ice

Rangers winger Darroll Powe, who appeared to lose consciousness and was helped off after appearing to hit his head on the ice after a missed check on Matt Hendricks at center ice at 3:51 of the second period, did not return to Sunday night's game against the Capitals.

Powe, who played only four shifts over 2:47, tried to hit Hendricks with a shoulder but Hendricks went low, and Powe flipped over the Caps forward and landed awkwardly on his neck. He then stayed on the ice, barely moving, while trainer Jim Ramsey tended to him. After he got to his knees, Derek Stepan and Arron Asham helped him to the dressing room.

Powe, who was acquired from the Wild on Feb. 4 in exchange for Mike Rupp, was playing his 300th game in five NHL seasons. He has been a fixture on the fourth line and penalty kill. Given Powe's status, Chris Kreider, who was called up from Hartford as a precaution in case Rick Nash couldn't play, could remain on the roster.

Nash OK to play

After missing Saturday's practice for "maintenance," Nash was credited with his ninth assist and team-leading 12th point on Carl Hagelin's tying goal in the second period. "I felt good in warm-ups," said Nash, who added he never considered not playing. "I had an extra day of rest."

Nash had a game-high eight shots on goal and was on ice for 22:33.

"They're not going in, but I'm getting the chances," he said. "A couple posts, point blanks. I thought they were going in for sure. [Braden] Holtby is a good goalie. He comes out and challenges pretty good and was effective in the first period, and really, during the whole game."

The Rangers outhit the Capitals 34-22 and blocked 18 shots. Three of those blocks were of Alex Ovechkin's attempts.
