Frolov injures right leg

ST. LOUIS - Add Alex Frolov to the list for the M*A*S*H* unit. The left wing injured his right leg in the third period when Brad Winchester fell on it and it bent awkwardly. Frolov went to the dressing room and came back for one more shift. He was examined after the game, but the Rangers said they would not have an update on his condition Saturday night.

Rookie defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who played 11:39 in his second NHL game, also was limping in the locker room after blocking a shot with his right foot.

"Any time you block a shot, it's going to sting, but you have to keep going until you get it out of the zone," McDonagh said.

Referring to his comfort level, he added, "But it's amazing what one game can do for you. They showed me clips between periods of our defensive play and that helped."

Biron kicks the Blues

It was the first win over St. Louis for Martin Biron, who was 0-7-0-2 in his career. "Henrik and I are a combined 0-9-0-2. There's a first time for everything, I guess," he said. "I felt the last game that I played against them in the beginning of the season [Nov. 11], it was a 1-0 game, and with an empty-netter, 2-0. I felt I played well, and the last game that I played in Florida [a 3-0 loss last Sunday] was probably my best of the year."

Gaborik feeling good

"These last couple of games, we showed we can play with anybody," said Marian Gaborik, who led the Rangers with six shots. "Tonight we were pretty much rolling four lines and Marty was great in net. These last couple wins against good teams can help down the road." . . . Brandon Dubinsky assisted on both Rangers goals. He leads the team with 20 assists.

Low profile for Sauer

Most rookies want to be noticed. For defenseman Michael Sauer, it's better to be less visible.

"You never notice him. That's good for a defenseman," coach John Tortorella said.

The unheralded Sauer, 23, a stay-at-home defenseman in the classic mold, is tied for first among rookies with a plus-11 rating. He has played 36 games, and although he has only one goal and three assists, the 2005 second-round draft pick is contributing.

"For a young guy in his first year, his positioning is really good, and that's key for him," Tortorella said. "He's done a great job away from the puck defensively, and offensively as well, jumping into holes so we can have four guys on the attack."

Sauer made the club out of camp, staving off challenges from other prospects and veterans such as Garnet Exelby. "It's a huge thing for the organization,'' Tortorella said, "because no one expected it."

Rozsival out again

D Michal Rozsival (ribs) skated in warmups but left early and missed his second straight game. McDonagh, who debuted Friday against the Stars, filled in again. In Dallas, "he did some good things, but he struggled taking time and space," Tortorella said. " . . . All in all, for his first game, it wasn't bad at all . . . I thought he handled himself very well."

Blue notes

Vinny Prospal (knee surgery) and Ryan Callahan (broken hand) are expected to skate Sunday at the Rangers' training center. Prospal was shut down a week ago, but an arthrogram showed healing and he has been cleared to resume skating. It will be Callahan's first spin since he suffered his injury; he is expected to be out another three weeks.
