Ducks complete sweep of Riversharks

With an outburst of offense driving the Ducks' two-game winning streak into Sunday's game, the team needed just a hint of timely hitting to extend their winning ways.

Kraig Binick singled home Wilberto Ortiz from third with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Ducks a 2-1 walk-off win over the Camden Riversharks, and a sweep of their home-opening three-game series at Bethpage Park.

"It's awesome," Binick said of his game-winner. "It brings the team together; you get yourself a hit, it's all positive."

Ortiz led off the 11th with a double to left and was moved to third on Dan Lyons' sacrifice bunt. Binick drove the second pitch he saw into the gap in left-centerfield.

"I'm just thinking get a pitch out over the plate and lift it out in the air because the infield was in and give the team a chance to win," Binick said. "I got a pitch up and took advantage of it."

Camden (4-6) opened the scoring in the top of the sixth with an RBI groundout by Chris Walker that scored Bill Rice. The Ducks (6-4) answered in the bottom of the seventh with Lew Ford's solo home run, his third of the season.

The Ducks had scored 13 runs in each of the first two games of the series, winning 13-2 Friday and 13-5 Saturday, but struggled to bring runners home Sunday despite 14 hits. The Ducks left 12 men on base, grounded into three double plays, and had just two extra-base hits.

Manager Kevin Baez said he was still pleased with his team's effort and persistence.

"It's always frustrating, especially when you score but guys come out and try to do their best every day," Baez said. "Guys stepped up, though, and it was a good pitchers' duel today and good that we came out on top."

Camden starter Mike McGuire gave up one run, eight hits and three walks with three strikeouts in seven innings, but Ducks ace Mike Loree matched him by allowing one run, four hits and a walk with six strikeouts in seven innings. Loree dropped his ERA to 2.08, though he is still without a decision in three starts.

The Ducks' bullpen was nearly perfect as Jeremy Hill of Dix Hills, Jon Meloan and Jeff Lyman combined to strike out seven and allow just one hit and a walk in four innings. Lyman earned the win and Camden's John Lujan took the loss.

Notes & quotes: Ryan Garko has reached base safely in all 10 games this season. The Ducks' catcher extended his hitting streak to nine games with an infield single in the eighth. He finished 2-for-5 and was 6-for-13 with a home run, a double and three RBIs in the three-game series. Ford also went 6-for-13 in the series, with two home runs, two doubles, five RBIs and four runs scored.
