I try to schedule vacations for late August to avoid the NFL preseason, which mostly works well, thank you. The downside is I end up having to catch up on the flurry of big football TV news ahead of Week 1.

Let’s do so together, shall we?

Fox will unveil a new designated pregame show “comedic prognosticator’’ when Rob Riggle – formerly of “21 Jump Street’’ and “The Daily Show” and currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corps Reserves – replaces longtime comedic prognosticator Frank Caliendo.

Chris Berman, who recently re-upped with ESPN through the end of the decade, will call NFL play-by-play for the very first time Monday night when the Chargers face the Raiders in the second game of a doubleheader.

Speaking of “Monday Night Football,’’ as part of the Rolling Stones’ 50th anniversary celebration the band will provide music that will be incorporated in ESPN’s coverage throughout the season.

(Not to be confused among baby boomer-oriented musical initiatives with Turner using Bruce Springsteen to promote the baseball postseason.)

I assume ESPN also hired some new NFL analysts, but frankly, I lost track years ago.
