Bellator 222 weigh-in results
Aside from a late arrival, the Bellator 222 weigh-ins didn’t feature too much drama. Weight was made by all but one competitor on the card, and even by one fighter not scheduled to appear.
Jon Fitch weighed in at 169.2 on Thursday morning, under the championship limit for welterweight, despite not having a fight booked for Friday’s event at Madison Square Garden. Fitch is serving as an alternate for the main event, in which Rory MacDonald defends his title against Nieman Gracie while also competing for a spot in the Bellator welterweight grand prix final. MacDonald and Gracie also made weight, the champ coming in at 169.4 and the challenger at 169.8.
A Bellator representative said Fitch needed to weigh in during the official proceedings to be eligible as an alternate in the eyes of the New York State Athletic Commission.
On Wednesday, Bellator president Scott Coker indicated Fitch was added as an alternate because he did not want to halt progress in the welterweight grand prix should MacDonald or Gracie not make it to the cage. As of now, there is no indication the current main event won’t happen.
Kenny Rivera, who opens the preliminaries against John Beneduce, almost didn't make it to weigh-ins, but arrived a few minutes after the 11 a.m. deadline and was allowed to step on the scale, weighing 145.8 pounds. NYC's Rivera did not get to the fighter hotel in time for weigh-ins due to transportation issues, a Bellator representative said, but was given an extra 15 minutes to show up.
The card remains unchanged at this point except for a small tweak in the preliminaries.
The bout between Brooklyn’s Heather Hardy and Taylor Turner will now be at a 128-pound catchweight instead of flyweight as originally planned. A Bellator representative said the decision to change weights was made Wednesday night when it became a possibility that one or both of the fighters could miss the 125-pound limit and the bout could be in jeopardy.
Both Hardy and Taylor logged in at 127.8 pounds.
