Newsday wins nine top-10 honors, including three in the breaking news category, at The Associated Press Sports Editors contest

Newsday won six top-10 honors, including three winning entries in the breaking news category, at The Associated Press Sports Editors annual contest this week in St. Petersburg, Florida.

In addition to the breaking news winning entries, Newsday also placed in the top 10 in special section, long video and multimedia.

“I’m thrilled for the entire Newsday sports team,” Newsday sports editor Hank Winnicki said. “The competition is so tough, and it’s a great honor to win these prestigious awards. I’m particularly proud that we won three top-10 awards in breaking news. That’s an amazing feat. The awards also show the great work we’re doing across platforms.”

Jim Baumbach and Robert Brodsky won in the breaking news category for first reporting that the Islanders’ proposal to build a new arena at Belmont Park in Elmont was selected as the winning bid by Empire State Development.

Newsday won in the breaking news category for a story on how Mets owner Fred Wilpon repeatedly protected manager Terry Collins, even as his son, chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, and general manager Sandy Alderson sought Collins’ dismissal at various points during his tenure with the team. Former Newsday Mets beat reporter Marc Carig reported the story.

The story on Joshua Mileto, an 11th-grade student at Sachem High School East who died after a log fell on his head during a training drill at an offseason football camp on school grounds, also finished in the top 10 in the breaking news category. The story was reported by Baumbach, Laura Blasey, Nicole Fuller, Chau Lam, Gregg Sarra, William Murphy, Joie Tyrrell and Rachel Uda.

Newsday’s Baseball Preview section, a long video called “The Cut,” and an interactive look at how the Yankees’ American League Championship Series roster was built also won top-10 honors.

Newsday’s winning Baseball Preview section submission was honored in the special section category. The Baseball Preview featured comprehensive previews of the Yankees and Mets. The enterprise package “All That Yaz” by Steven Marcus was a look back on the 50th anniversary of Long Island native Carl Yastrzemski’s Triple Crown season of 1967, and the “Baseball 101” feature “First Things First’’ by Mark Herrmann gave readers an entertaining, yet historically informative look at the game’s significant “firsts.”

“The Cut” chronicled the growing issues and concern over professional athletes cutting weight. The video documented stories of boxers, MMA fighters, wrestlers and jockeys and what they’ve gone through to reach a certain weight in order to compete. Jeff Basinger, Bobby Cassidy, Chris Ware, Mark La Monica and Megan Miller were contributors to the video.

The interactive roster for the Yankees’ ALCS team, by Ryan Gerbosi, Mark La Monica and TC McCarthy, allowed users to see how much money the Yankees had committed at each position and how many players were above or below a certain age. It placed in the top 10 in the multimedia category.

Newsday also earned honorable mentions for its daily sports section, Sunday sports section and daily website.
