Denmark hires Riemer as permanent coach following departure of Hjulmand after Euro 2024

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Denmark hired Brian Riemer as coach on Thursday, finally settling on a permanent replacement for Kasper Hjulmand following his departure after the European Championship.

The 46-year-old Riemer, who was recently in charge at Belgian club Anderlecht, has a contract until the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Hjulmand stepped down after Euro 2024, where Denmark drew its three group games before losing to Germany in the round of 16.

Since then, Morten Wieghorst, a former Denmark international, was placed in interim charge until next year before going on sick leave with minor stress symptoms. Augsburg assistant coach Lars Knudsen then briefly took temporary control of the team.

Knudsen, Wieghorst and Daniel Agger, the former Denmark and Liverpool defender, will continue as assistant coaches to Riemer, the Danish Football Union said.

Riemer, who grew up in suburban Copenhagen and has been a coach at FC Copenhagen and English Premier League club Brentford, “has extensive experience of working with top-shelf footballers and of being in a place where it is crucial to constantly create results and deal with great pressure from the outside,” Denmark director of football Peter Møller said in a statement.

Riemer's first game in charge will be at home to Spain in the Nations League on Nov. 15. Denmark then travels to play Serbia three days later.
