RUNNINGKenyan sets Boston mark

Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot won the 114th Boston Marathon yesterday, finishing in 2:05:52 to shatter the course record of 2:07:14 set four years ago by four-time winner and fellow Kenyan Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot, who's not related.

Cheruiyot, 21, finished 1:31 ahead of Ethiopian Tekeste Kebede to give Kenya its 18th men's victory in 20 years. Defending champion Deriba Merga was third.

Ethiopia's Teyba Erkesso won the women's race by 3 seconds over Russia's Tatyana Pushkareva in 2:26:11. Kenya's Salina Kosgei was third.

Rico Hines, who played for Steve Lavin at UCLA, was named to Lavin's staff at St. John's. Hines, 32, spent the last four seasons with the Golden State Warriors, working in player development and offseason training programs.

St. John's continued to await word from Mike Dunlap, Lavin's choice to become his lead assistant. Dunlap was hoping for the head-coaching job at Colorado, but that position went to Tad Boyle. Dunlap still could be in contention for the vacancy at Oregon, where he was the associate head coach.

Rutgers coach resigns

Fred Hill has resigned as Rutgers basketball coach. The university told Hill last month that he wouldn't return after he yelled at Pittsburgh coaches after a baseball game. Rutgers baseball team is coached by Hill's father. - AP
