Frank Ryan, the quarterback who led the Cleveland Browns to their last NFL title in 1964, died on Jan. 1 at age 87.

Gus Alfieri

Gus Alfieri, a former St. John’s player and longtime St. Anthony’s High School coach, died at age 87 on Jan. 1.

Mario Zagallo

Mario Zagallo, who won two World Cups as a player, one as a coach and another as an assistant coach for Brazil, died on Jan. 5 at age 92. 

Franz Beckenbauer

Franz Beckenbauer, who won the World Cup both as player and coach for Germany and also played for the New York Cosmos, died on Jan. 7 at age 78.

Bud Harrelson

Bud Harrelson, the shortstop on the 1969 Miracle Mets who famously brawled with Pete Rose in the 1973 NLCS and a co-founder and co-owner of the Long Island Ducks, died on Jan. 11. He was 79.
