Dolphins cut QB Garrard

Quarterback David Garrard has been released by the Miami Dolphins, leaving Matt Moore as the veteran backup to rookie starter Ryan Tannehill. Garrard, 34, signed in March and climbed atop the depth chart in training camp before he was sidelined by a left knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery Aug. 11. The veteran's $2.25-million salary would have been guaranteed if he was on the roster for the opener.

Alabama takes over No. 1

Alabama is the new No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll, moving past Southern California after its resounding victory against Michigan. The Tide received 45 first-place votes, up 28 from last week. USC drew 11 first-place votes and No. 3 LSU four.

Irish hit Pinkett again

The Notre Dame radio network suspended former Irish running back and commentator Allen Pinkett without pay for two more games after his comments last week that teams need bad guys to give them an edge. Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick called Pinkett's comments "nonsense." . . . All-American defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, kicked off the LSU team Aug. 10, has enrolled in classes at the Baton Rouge school for the fall semester.

Hofstra in 2K Classic

Hofstra, Bucknell, South Dakota State, Northern New Mexico, District of Columbia, and West Alabama were among the schools announced Tuesday to complete the field for the 2K Sports Classic benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project. Marshall, New Mexico State and Niagara are the other schools. Alabama, Oregon State, Villanova and Purdue had been announced as regional hosts. The semifinals are Nov. 15 at Madison Square Garden. The regionals are Nov. 9 and 11. -- AP
