Absence does not always make the heart grow fonder.
In response to a question on Thursday after her victory over Mallory Burdette, Maria Sharapova acknowledged that her engagement to former NBA player Sasha Vujacic was over, and had been since the spring. Vujacic played for the Lakers, who drafted him in 2004, then in 2010-11 with the Nets. He left the NBA to play in Turkey.
Vujacic had used Twitter on Thursday to say he was no longer engaged to Sharapova, whom he had proposed to in the fall of 2010. "It's been since the end of spring, actually," said Sharapova. "I was waiting for someone to ask me that question, but nobody did directly."
There appeared to be too much distance between them.
"Our career schedules just made it extremely difficult to see each other with the traveling, and especially his career move to Turkey," she said. "He wasn't home one time during the 10 months he was in Turkey."
