Sue Bird signs multiyear deal with Seattle Storm

Syosset’s Sue Bird re-signed with the Seattle Storm on Tuesday, the team announced.
Bird has spent her entire WNBA career with the Storm since being selected No. 1 overall by the team in 2002. She helped the Storm win WNBA titles in 2004 and 2010.
“Seattle is my home,” Bird said on the Storm’s website. “I am thrilled to be re-signing with the Storm. This franchise and city have been incredibly supportive throughout my career and I am looking forward to getting back to work with my teammates.”
Bird, 35, was the top WNBA free agent this season, but it never appeared as if she would leave the Storm. The point guard averaged 10.3 points and 5.4 assists in 27 games last season.
Bird has started in all 413 WNBA games she has played. She ranks second in league history with 2,215 assists, ninth in steals with 547 and 11th in points with 5,087. Bird was selected as one of the league’s 15 greatest players at the WNBA’s 15th anniversary celebration in 2011.
Next up for Bird is trying to earn a spot on another U.S. women’s national team for the Olympics. Bird has won three Olympic gold medals with the U.S. team and could go for a fourth this summer in Rio de Janiero if she is selected. Bird is a finalist and will attend the team’s training camp this weekend in Storrs, Connecticut.
