If you want the scoop on hard-to-find Manhattan speakeasies, here's the inside information on some that are worth searching for.

The Back Room

102 Norfolk St., Manhattan

HOW TO FIND Don't be concerned when you arrive at this address and see a waist-level gate with a sign that reads "Lower East Side Toy Co. "; you're in the right place. Open the gate, head down the stairs, and walk down an alley to find the main entrance (and if you get the feeling that this could have actually been a Prohibition-era speakeasy, trust your instincts, because this spot was a speakeasy during the 1920s).

WHAT YOU’LL FIND The Back Room is a cozy lounge with brick walls, paintings, soft chairs, cushy benches, a fireplace, and soft lighting-all under tin-plated ceilings-as well as a bar that sits beneath a glowing chandelier. Dress is casual but neat; no baseball hats or team jerseys are permitted. No cover.

WHAT'S ON THE MENU Beer, wine and champagne are options, as are a selection of signature cocktails, such as "The Bee'z Kneez" (vodka, honey liqueur, ginger liqueur, lemon, orange) and the "Quiet in the Alley" (tequila, Dolin Genepi le Chamois Liqueur, agave, lime) — and in honor of the venue’s speakeasy past, all drinks are served in teacups. No food is served.

ENTERTAINMENT Nightly fun is driven by a mix of rock and pop music except Mondays when there’s live jazz at 9 p.m.

HOURS Open 6 p.m. to close daily

HOW TO FIND Hidden away within Hotel 3232 (hotel3232nyc.com), if you walk down the hallway from the front desk, it is tucked behind a sliding door disguised as an elevator. If you are unsure, you can ask at the front desk, and the staff will point the way.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND The space follows a theme taken from night markets found in Asian countries, with decor including murals that depict those night markets, and lots of neon lights. Dress code is casual.

WHAT'S ON THE MENU The cocktail selection features drinks that reflect flavors found in Asian nations and cities, such as the "Szechuan Mala" (vodka, ginger ale, Litsea, citrus, mala spice) and the "Sweet Bangkok" (pandan, milk, white cacao liqueur, sugarcane juice). Foods include bites like scallion pancakes, honey butter-seasoned fries and popcorn chicken.

ENTERTAINMENT There's an arcade area featuring claw machines with toys to win ($2-$5 to play) and dial-operated Gachapon machines that dispense toys as well ($6-$8 per toy). Additionally, if you dare to let fate choose your drink, you can play a game with the bartender aptly called "Bartender's Choice," in which you roll dice, one for flavor and the other for the alcohol base-and you'll receive a drink crafted based on the dice rolls.

HOURS Open 6 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, until 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays; closed Sundays.

HOW TO FIND Upon arrival, you'll see a small (and actual) coffee shop called Stone Street Coffee Company (stonestreetcoffee.com)-which is a real coffee shop. Inside and toward the back, there's a secret door that looks like the rest of the wall, which is where you'll need to go to enter the speakeasy.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND Through the door lies a lengthy room with booths, a bar and an actual bathtub — the room is designed to look like a Prohibition-era speakeasy, kept dimly lit with decor that recalls the 1920s. Dress code is smart casual; no baseball hats or tank tops permitted.

WHAT'S ON THE MENU The drinks mainly focus on gin and feature more than 125 gins sourced from around the world. There's a Gin-and-Tonic menu with eight different gins and house-made tonics. The coffee shop front comes into play as it lends its Stone Street Coffee Espresso to create the back joint's "Espresso Martini." Guests can also make their own s'mores and look for the venue's signature chicken sliders and potato dauphinoise.
