"Long Island" is now officially one of Oprah Winfrey's favorite things.

On Tuesday, the media mogul and former queen of daytime TV announced that "Long Island," Colm Tóibín's sequel to his 2009 bestseller, "Brooklyn," is her latest book club pick. The novel takes place 20 years after "Brooklyn," and has the couple from that book, Eilis Lacey and Tony Fiorello, trapped in an unhappy marriage in Lindenhurst in 1976. Central to their marital troubles is the news that Tony has had an affair with a married woman who is carrying his child.

“I had so many mixed emotions reading this novel,” Winfrey said in a statement. "I was captivated. Tóibín builds the story around a woman whose life changes seemingly overnight with the news of her husband’s infidelity. It opens the door to her own secrets, grappling with choices she made long ago, urging her to break free from the silences she built around her life. A wonderful page-turner to start your summer reading."

“Brooklyn” was adapted into a 2015 movie starring Saoirse Ronan as Lacey. The film earned three Oscar nominations, including best picture, best actress and best adapted screenplay by Nick Hornby.

Tóibín, 68, in a statement said that he was taken aback when Winfrey called to give him the news. "Somehow, it was clear that this was not a joke, not a hoax," he said. "I was tempted to say: ‘How are you?’ But I think I spluttered a bit instead. Eventually, I managed to say that I deeply admire the way in which she connects books to readers. And then I added, as though it was an afterthought, that I was so delighted that she had chosen mine.”

Long Islanders can hear for themselves about Tóibín's reaction at being chosen when he discusses the book and reads excerpts from it at the East Meadow Public Library on May 18 at 2 p.m. Due to limited space, registration is required. To sign up, go to eastmeadow.info.
