Nicole Jellen, of Port Jefferson Station, has received a 2024 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence from the State University of New York for integrating excellence into many different aspects of their lives. Jellen is to graduate from Stony Brook University’s School of Nursing in May, and her achievements include maintaining a 3.94 grade-point average and being elected as president of the university’s Pre-Nursing Society in 2023. Her other activities include being a pathophysiology and pharmacology tutor to fellow students, a member of the social media committee for Sigma Kappa Gamma, and a volunteer for the March of Dimes.
Michael R. Ebert is an education researcher and has worked for Newsday in various capacities since 2003. He was part of an 11-person team named as 2008 Pulitzer Prize finalists for investigative coverage of the LIRR's platform safety issues.
