Bay Shore EMT Bryant Ortiz identified as victim of fatal motorcycle crash
A Brentwood motorcyclist has been identified as the victim of a fatal crash early Monday morning in Bay Shore, Su
ffolk police said.Bryant Ortiz, 32, was killed at 12:15 a.m. when his 2006 Suzuki motorcycle struck the rear of a 2016 Volkswagen heading north on Fifth Avenue and turning left onto Spur Drive North, authorities said.
Ortiz, who was southbound on Fifth Avenue, was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Ortiz was an EMT with the Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance and later the Brentwood Legion Ambulance, according to a Facebook post from both groups Tuesday confirmed by the ambulance company.
Ortiz joined the Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance in 2010 and held multiple leadership roles, including serving as captain, the post stated.
He joined the paid ranks of the Brentwood Legion Ambulance in August 2022 and developed a reputation for professionalism and a strong work ethic, officials said.
“Bryant will always be remembered for his charm, wit, infectious laughter and passion for EMS,” wrote Bay Shore Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance Chief Charles Chapman and Brentwood Legion Ambulance Chief Francisco Martinez. “He valued high quality patient care and strived for excellence in and out of the agency.”
The driver of the sedan, a Bay Shore resident, was not injured.
The Volkswagen and the Suzuki were impounded for safety checks.
Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
