Commack’s Evan Kay rewrote the record book for Long Island pitchers last week. The senior’s streak of scoreless innings pitched was finally snapped in a Suffolk League II game against Ward Melville.

The new record is 60 innings.

“It’s an amazing accomplishment when you really think about it,” Commack coach Matt Salmon said. “You need to be really good, really lucky and have great defensive support.”

Kay gave up a run with two outs in the first inning against Ward Melville and suffered his first high-school loss in a 2-1 defeat on April 30.

“It was a great run and time to start a new one,” Kay said. “I’ve had excellent defense and been able to pitch out of a few tough spots.”

Kay threw four consecutive shutouts to lead Commack to the Long Island Class A title in 2023. Commack (11-5, 10-4) is currently third in League II.

Dynamic pitching was also on full display in softball.

Marissa Nosovitch of Carle Place and Madison DeMaio of Sewanhaka each struck out 20 batters in one game.

Nosovitch struck out 20 and allowed three hits and one walk in a 3-1 win over Hicksville on April 30. DeMaio also fanned 20 batters and allowed one hit in a 5-1 win over Floral Park on May 2.

DeMaio had quite the week. She also struck out 17 in a 6-0 win over South Side on April 30. In that game, she had a homer, a triple, two RBIs and scored three runs.

There were plenty of heavy hitters this week, but we had a rarity in softball. Madysen Bauer connected for two grand slams in Centereach's 13-9 win over Bellport on May 1. Bauer also struck out seven to earn the victory.
