Brianna Voyer stepped into the circle for the last of the seventh in the bright sunshine Friday over Seaford’s softball field. The senior righthander made it go like this — strikeout swinging, strikeout looking, strikeout swinging, ending the game with an exclamation point.

Despite a strong outing by Voyer, Mineola had fallen by a run 20 days prior against Nassau II-leading Seaford, now in Class A and with seven starters back from last season’s Long Island Class B title team.

This time, Voyer fired a four-hitter and struck out nine, and the Mustangs took home a 7-2 win.

“So satisfying,” Voyer said. “I am so happy about everything we did as a team. Everything we do is teamwork.”

So does this announce Mineola (7-4, 7-4) as a true contender in A?

“I hope so,” coach Monique Wink said. “I do think so. I think every team in our conference in A is a fantastic team and they’re well coached. But when you can stay in softball games, it always gives you a chance. So you always have hope.”

Voyer (7-3), who walked two and hit two, certainly provides hope.

“In the circle, she’s unbelievable,” Wink said of the D-III Marywood commit. “She is a fierce competitor.”

The loss went to junior righthander Skyler Secondino (9-3), a 2023 second-team All-Long Island pick who earned a 2-1 win in the first meeting.

But there were three unearned runs on Secondino’s line from a four-run third, and a throwing error let a runner cross in a three-run sixth. She allowed eight hits — five on the infield — walked five and struck out eight.

Mineola also threw out two runners at the plate, one on a throw from right by Ava Murphy after a catch.

“I think that there were things that we typically execute that we did not execute today,” coach Joe Nastasi said after his Vikings fell to 11-3 overall and 10-2 in the conference.

“ . . . This is a resilient group that’s bounced back from losses before.”

Sage Rowan delivered a ground-rule RBI double to left-center in the third.

Fellow freshman Ava Lopez, highlighting the Mustangs’ more aggressive approach late in the regular season, had an RBI bunt single to cap the rally and make it 4-1.

Voyer and Julianna Plunkett had RBI singles in the sixth-inning rally that made it 7-2.

“Today,” Wink said, “is just a really good win against a really well-coached team, a very talented team.”
