LI white-collar boxers to risk black eyes for fundraiser

The date is set, the venue is booked and the boxers in the 11th Long Island Fight for Charity have been announced.

Last night, the names of 15 Long Island business people were revealed at the Chateau Briand in Carle Place in advance of the annual charity fight, scheduled for Nov. 25 at the Hilton Long Island, in Melville.

Fighters include local brawlers like Joe "Limo King of the Ring" Palumbo, managing partner at Camelot Specialty Limos in Farmingdale, and Joanne "Turbo Jo" Duchnowski, president and owner of House of Details Motorcycle Detailing Services in Huntington.

"This event brings in the movers and shakers of the Long Island business community," said Jeff Cohen, co-founder of Fight for Charity.

Started in 2003, the event has brought more than 150 members of the Long Island business community together to duke it out, raising more than $850,000 for charities, including the Long Island Community Chest, The Genesis School and the National Foundation for Human Potential. The boxers wear protective headgear; winners aren't named in the bouts.

The boxers solicit funds from sponsors, and each fighter must commit to raise a minimum of $5,000. Last year's event beat previous attendance numbers and raised a record $200,000.

Sponsors of returning fighter Sal "The Hammer" Ferro, president and CEO of Alure Home Improvements in Plainview, raised $80,000 last year, a record for the event.

Making a debut this year will be Jamie "Superfly" Stuart, Emmy Award-winning sports anchor and reporter for News 12 Long Island. News 12 is a broadcast property of Cablevision Systems Corp. of Bethpage, owner of Newsday.

"Every year there's new boxers and new people involved, and it's really what generates excitement," said Cohen. "Everyone just wants to see what happens."

Specific matchups for the fight are expected to be announced sometime in October, said an event spokesman.
