A new ShopRite opened this week in Massapequa, at a former Waldbaum’s site purchased from the bankrupt A&P chain.

The renovated 67,000-square-foot store at 5508 Sunrise Hwy. opened Tuesday and will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sunday at 8 a.m.

ShopRite of Massapequa is operated by Buonadonna ShopRite LLC, which also runs ShopRites in Bay Shore and West Babylon. It is “a family business committed to the families we serve,” company owner Melissa Buonadonna-Hernandez said in a statement.

The supermarket sells a full selection of groceries, including organic and gluten-free products, prepared foods such as sushi, salads and olives, made-to-order sandwiches, cheesesteaks, a hot buffet and coffee.

The store also includes a bake shop offering cakes and fresh bread, seafood delivered daily, a floral shop and a deli. It will employ 175 full- and part-time workers.

ShopRite is a trademark of Keasbey, New Jersey-based Wakefern Food Corp., a cooperative of retailer-owned stores. The Massapequa supermarket is one of four Waldbaum’s and Pathmark stores on Long Island bought by Wakefern from A&P.

The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., headquartered in Montvale, New Jersey, filed in July 2015 for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and reorganization. The company has ceased operating supermarkets.

All 51 Waldbaum’s and Pathmark stores operated by A&P on Long Island closed by last November. Thirty were bought by supermarket chains, 20 were turned over to their landlords and one was sold to a real estate company.
