Northwell hires Dr. Richard Barakat to lead cancer services
Northwell Health on Thursday said it has hired the director of Memorial Sloan Kettering’s regional network, Dr. Richard Barakat, to lead its cancer services and research.
The network includes MSK’s recently expanded center in Commack and MSK Nassau, a $180 million cancer facility under construction at the Hub in Uniondale that is on track to open by September 2019.
Barakat, who has been with MSK for 27 years, joins Northwell on April 30.
At MSK he also served as chief of the gynecology services from 2001 to 2013 and took the lead on several research projects, including a study to compare the benefits of laparoscopic versus standard surgery for patients with endometrial cancer.
“Dr. Barakat has been an integral part of MSK for many years and served with dedication and distinction. We wish him the very best,” MSK said in a statement. A replacement hasn’t been named.
The announcement comes two days after Northwell announced a clinical affiliation with ProCure Proton Therapy Center, a New Jersey-based provider of proton-beam-therapy cancer treatments.
Northwell said its affiliation with ProCure will allow it to provide the treatment to its patients, who would travel to ProCure’s Somerset, New Jersey, facility for the care.
Northwell has designated two staff doctors who will meet patients at Somerset for care.
New Hyde Park-based Northwell is New York State’s largest private employer, with about 66,000 employees.
